TOPIC: ISSUE50 - "In order to improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level, all faculty should be required to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach."
WORDS: 518 TIME: 00:40:00 DATE: 2010/8/13 14:57:57
The ivory tower, in our eyes, might be a little bit too idealistic. And the speaker's assertion encourages all faculties to work outside the academic field in professions relevant to the courses they teach, so as to improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level. Based on my observation, I fundamentally agree with this contention.
Spending time in relevant work would conduce to more effective and practical teaching in classes. According to the recent statistics from the education department of some prestigious university in United States, the knowledge of many disciplines and fields nowadays are changing so drastically almost every moment that what students have learned in freshman and sophomore years would be totally useless when they graduated. And this situation stands out especially in the fields of information technology and bio-chemistry. These courses are critical to today's science development and contribute to human lives to larger and larger extent; thus many scholars and researchers exert their efforts in discovering technologies and know-how in such fields. However, this is not a good signal for instruction in schools. Fortunately, through working in professions relevant to the courses the faculty teach, they tend to conceive new ideas and concepts and latest trends in their disciplines. Moreover, the practice in solving real world problems would help teachers with their case study teaching, especially for business school faculty.
On the other hand, students who are eager to make up their own career plans would also benefit from teachers' experience in relevant jobs. The faculty would utilize the opportunities working in relevant enterprise to become familiar with the advantages and disadvantages of specific careers relevant to their fields. And this is of extremely significance for students who want to plan their career before stepping in society. Teachers would be better capable of imparting both latest expertise and relevant experience about solving real world problems to their students. Thus students can envisage their future career’s contents and prospects.
Furthermore, with ample practice and experience, the faculty in university would come up with breakthroughs more easily. Not only the quality of instruction would profit from this scheme, research and study held by faculty might also enjoy a boom. In history, many inventions and brand-new concepts stem from needs in society. Once the teachers work in relevant professions they study, they would probably find new problems which might not be perceived in labs, thus they would study on them and find solutions. In this way, people would expect more breakthroughs from teachers who have experience outside their academic world
However, undue time of working would undermine the quality of teaching in colleges. If the faculties spend too long time in working, they would find the time for teaching and preparing for teaching is restricted, which would reversely impair the effectiveness of instruction. Thus, we should prevent such situation and set some kind of limit for the faculty.
And the speaker's assertion that all faculties should be required to do so is a hasty generalization. For some specific fields, such scheme is not feasible. Like theoretical physics, it might not be an easy task for faculty majoring this to find apt jobs. And for some subjects, like music composing and painting, relevant jobs might be very similar with academic activities. For these subjects, the feasibility of the notion is challenged.
In sum, I agree insofar as most faculties would benefit from spending some time working outside the academic world in profession relevant to the courses they teach, as long as the instruction would not be undermined by excessive jobs. |
