172"Important truths begin as outrageous, or at least uncomfortable, attacks upon the accepted wisdom of the time." 172.
1. Truth??=discovery or new idea?
2. Wisdom=?
I fundamentally agree with the speaker’s contention. It is true that (换成that)some important truths usually begin as outrageous, or at least uncomfortable, and attacks upon the accepted wisdom of the time.(直接引用可能不大好吧!) However, it is not always the case. In certain fields of new technology and knowledge(science and technology), important truths are sometimes required to meet the need of society.
Compared with the effort to discover truth, the spread of truth is a tortuous way, which is filled with challenge, with sticks and sometimes with dangerous(dangers?). There are two reasons to interpret why these important truths begin as uncomfortable, and even outrageous. First, people are usually used to the controversial things and reluctant to have changes. If the truths are against their believe, their experience, their ways of life, their method of dealing with matters, they will tend to stand against them. They are willing to remain as usually unless the power of truths is strong enough to force them to change. We can know these from the common sense and our daily life experience. For instance, thought the law of free fall which is found by Galileo have been best known for one hundreds years, people, even those who know it in school, tend to neglect the truth and hold the bias easily attained in daily life.
The other reason is that these important truths endanger somebody’s interest and authority. In order to sustain their status not be challenged, authoritarians are tend to (suppress) these different voices. When we look back to human history, we will found(find) that a great many truths, including new theories, new ideas(theory, idea 和truth 一样抽象,当例子用好像不合适吧!) were regarded as heresy, harmful things or even deemed as evil(是否有语法错误). Denis Diderot, who vehemently criticized the feudal system and opposed the religious persecution his truth that encyclopedia suffered the severe coercion and incineration.(读不懂) For the two reason above, important truth are always treated as attacks upon the accept wisdom of time.
However, some important truths do not confront such difficulty and counteract in their beginning. This case often happened in the new field where old authority has litter power to suppress the new truths.(信息技术的例子好像和这句话对不上) Take the information technology as an example. The invention of computers exploits a completely new domain in human history. Thus, it mushrooms in a free air and faces up with litter stunt. Few of us will feel uncomfortable when a new kind of electronic product is developed. Contrarily, most people embrace the fruits from the valuable truths discovered by scientists. In some extreme instance, truth does not offense the wisdom of the time, but caters for the need of society. For instance, recently human have been attack by the disease named SARS(serious ??) which brings catastrophic endemic?(epidemic or pandemic?). People badly want to know what virus causes this disease and how man can defeat it. Thus ,the truth about such disease become the goal of scientists and obviously no one will be against it. 反例
In conclusion, though the truths are not always oppressed at the beginning, those who endeavor to quest for truth have to prepare for the possible challenge and should stand firmly on their own ground. From another point of view, we have to be object to judge them and avoid from being obscured by the established opinions in our mind, whether truths are consistent to the accepted wisdom of the time or not. |
