111.(商业,生产/决策/并列)The followingappeared in a memo from the vice president of marketing at Dura-Sock, Inc.
"A recent study of Dura-Sock wearers suggests that ourcompany is wasting the money it spends on its patented "Endure"manufacturing process, which ensures that our socks are strong enough to lastfor two years. Dura-Sock has always advertised its useof the "Endure" process, but the new study shows that the averageDura-Sock customer actually purchases new Dura-Socks every threemonths. Furthermore, Dura-Sock customers surveyed in our largest market, northeastern United States cities, say that they most value Dura-Sock's stylish appearance and availability in many colors. These findings suggest that Dura-Sockcan increase its profits by discontinuing its use of the "Endure"manufacturing process."
提纲:
The author claims that Dura-Sock canincrease profit through discontinuing its use of “Endure” manufacturingprocess. However, after strict analysis the author’s argument might not be aspersuasive as it first sounds.
To begin with, according to the author, astudy shows that the average Dura-Sock customers purchases new Dura-Socks everythree months. Yet, this does not necessarily means that people throw away apair of socks after they are bought for three months. People often have severalsocks and wear them in turn. And they are throwing the older one that was boughtquite a long time ago. And in this way people need the socks be strong for acertain longer time.
However, the author failed to inform us howlong will the socks be tough without the process of “Endure”.
If the socks without the process could merelylast for a short time for 2 months, the trial to omit “Endure” would disappointmost users, and in the end cause terrible loss of market share. On this condition, the company should not take the proposed condition.
Even though socks produced without “Endure”process have a longer average that could be a little longer than demand, itdoes not reasonably explain the proposal that we should abandon the process. Theaverage strong time of the socks is a statistic concept which means that apercentage of socks are probably worn after 2 years. And from the point of anengineer, it also means that the longer average time the socks are, the lesspossibility they are broken in three months, since the longer one have betterqualities. Thus if we miss “Endure” process, there will definitely be moresocks that are worn out within common demand time. As a result, more negativecomplains are made and the reputation of “Enduring” which the company havealways been advertising is undermined. And since the author didn’t take intoaccount how much the cost is cut, whether or not the proposal of discontinuing “Endure”process can make profits depends.
The survey in northeast cities shows that DScustomers are more interested in stylish and colors. Yet, the author failed tomake it clear what a proportion the northeast possess, because 90 % could bethe largest one as well as 10%, yet the two numbers have contrast connotation.Even though we presume that the survey is valid, the result could be explainedthat customers of DS who have no worry about quality of the socks and thus arepaying more stylish of the socks to the diversity of the socks. But actually, they are making decision with the condition of good quality of the socks. Evenif we assume that most people take more concerns about style rather thanquality. It is still sure that since previous socks are comparatively more enduring,DS have win a certain amount of market share of those who always worn theirsocks out for working or exercising reasons. Moreover, it is common sense thatmost buyers combine the quality concern with style concern. And they are makingchoices with a comprehensive evaluation. Thus an action of cutting “Enduring”process without taking in more stylish diversity would lead to the cut of competiveness, which would lead to a shrink in total sales. And as a result, whether or notthe proposed action would be profitable is still unclear.
From what has been argued above, to makehis or her suggestion laudable, the author has to provide more details and makesensible evaluations about the effects of discontinuing the “Endure” process. |
