"The study of history places too much emphasis on individuals. The most significant events and trends in history were made possible not by the famous few, but by groups of people whose identities have long been forgotten."
I admit that, the common people create history. The history will be incomplete without the public, especially in most significant events and trends in history.
However, famous few, great man and women in history do play a very important role in the development of human society, especially their leading capability and strategic vision that would not be possessed by common people. Thus I think special attention should be given to those who have contributed a lot to human civilization and the evolution of human society.
Firstly, history is created by the common people. For example, the French Revolution began in 1789 lasted for ten years, which was carried out by French people. During this revolution, the absolute monarchy that had ruled France for centuries collapsed. The French society underwent an epic transformation as feudal, aristocratic, religious privileges evaporated by the masses’ efforts. Old ideas about hierarchy and tradition succumbed to new Enlightenment principle and inalienable rights. If the masses, did not participated in this revolution, only the leader could not throw over monarchy system that had been existed for several centuries.
However, looking back history, some individuals did play a very important role in the most significant events and trends. Back to the above example, it was the leader, the great man or women who led the common people strive with the tyrant in French Revolution, and it was Napoleon who led French people to beat the feudal European allies, and finally broadcasted the revolutionary conceptions to the rest of the continental European countries.
Why we should research on famous great men or women?
Because these persons have leadership could not be engaged by every person, and also because they have superior intelligence illuminating the common people. They attribute a lot to the human civilization; they changed common people’s thoughts. Under their influence, people have a better live. From researching on them, we learn a lot, including education, economy, business, culture and morality, those factors in turn contribute to human civilization. For example, Confucius was a profound philosopher and educator in ancient China, whose works covered personal and governmental morality, correctness of social relationships, education and justice of sincerity. His ideology influenced the Chinese people for thousands of years. His works are regarded as the essence of traditional Chinese classics, not only attract young Chinese to study in contemporary society, but also appeal to scholars who want to know more about traditional Chinese culture from all over the world.
Thus, it is important to emphasize on studying the great men and women, because they have contributed a lot to the human civilization and human society. From their works, personal characteristics and personal events, we learn how to develop our society and settle problem in an appropriate way, how to avoid making mistakes. |
