198, There is a general idea that a translation always fails to preserve some of the qualities that distinguish the original work—i.e., that 'something always gets lost in translation.' Writers, critics, and the general reading public unthinkingly accept this clich. But this belief is unwarranted: translators are sometimes distinguished authors themselves, and some authors may even translate their own works. As the translator pointed out in the preface to an English version of Dante's works, the violin and the piano make different sounds, but they can play what is recognizably the same piece of music. ★★★★★

The author resists the point hold by critics and the general reading public that something always gets lost in translation. He points out this belief’s faults: translators are sometimes distinguished authors themselves, and some authors may even translate their own works. To support his argument he adds an analogy that the violent and piano can play the same piece of music. However, his argument suffers from several critical flaws and is therefore unconvincing.


First and foremost, the arguer assumes unfairly that critics and general reading public accept the clinch that translation lost something compared to the original work without thinking. The author has no evidence to prove the assumption, perhaps the critics made the conclusion conscientiously after a professional survey and study; or perhaps someone of the general reading public master many kinds of languages fluently, they agree with the statement responsibly based on solid experience. Therefore, the author’s perspective to them is unreasonable prejudice.


Furthermore, the author hold the opposite belief that translation can preserve the whole original works since translators are sometimes distinguished authors themselves, and some authors may even translate their own works. However, these impudent reasons are totally overlook the essential of the problem, that it is not who or which occupation but the huge gap between different languages, cultures, social circumstances and life standards that take the vital role together. For example, the Eskimo can rarely understand the meaning of some articles especially with Australia or Africa elements. Moreover, the author offers no proof or statistics that the translators at the same time the authors themselves indicate they are satisfied with their achievements.


Last but not least, I suppose the analogy cited by author is unwarranted. On the one hand, the author cut out of a sentence in the preface of an English version of Dante's works, the meaning used there is worth suspiciously lifting out of context. On the other hand, the analogy is irrelatively wrong, since even if the violin and the piano can play what is recognizably the same piece of music, their difference in tone colors destine they can not give the performance totally same. In addition, the author depends on the hasty assumption that the difference between violin and piano is similar to the difference between translation and original work. For the arguer ignored the music and language is unlike, without more forceful demonstration I can not accept it.


In sum, the author has failed to provide adequate evidence to support his claim that the nothing can be lost in the process of translation. To strengthen the argument, the author should conduct a deep survey or study to demonstrate that the gaps established on a mess factors can be overcome on the cards. To better convince me I need some more proper and reasonable analogies.
