Theo: Popular music is not supposed to reflect reality; it performs other artistic functions, such as providing consoling fantasies and helping people create some romance in their often difficult lives. You should understand popular music before you condemn it.

The dialogue provides the most support for the claim that Maria and Theo disagree over whether

(A) most good art creates consoling illusions
(B) some bad art exaggerates the role love plays in everyday life

(C) art should always represent reality as it could be, not as it is.

Popular music 有自己的 artistic functions。

比如，可以提供一些安慰人的幻想等等。。。

所以， popular art 不能 reflect reality ，也是 good art。
即，Theo 同意（D）的说法： art need not represent reality accurately to be good art.

(C) art should always represent reality as it could be, not as it is.
art 应该总是 represent reality 按照（as）它本来应该是的样子（it could be），而不是（ not）像现在这样（as it is）。

As =in the way that，"按照……的方式", 引导方式状语从句。

it could be 它本来应该是
