72"One can best understand the most important characteristics of a society by studying its major cities."

I disagree with the assertion that ‘one can best understand the most important characteristics of a society by studying its major cities.’ Although there is much we can get from major cities about characteristics of a society, ordinary cities and rural area are proved to be at least as same important places as major cities for us to study a society.

As the center of economy, culture and politics in a country, major cities surely own something deserving our study that will considerably reflect the mores, the customs, the proprieties, and living style of the country. Whenever a country is mentioned, the most immediate image coming to mind is always that of its major cities. For example, when a man is asked of what the America look like, he may talk about skyscrapers, heavy traffic, and the dangerous subway full of vagabonds, which are typical features of New York City. When China is discussed, the answer probably is focused on the numerous people, the same amount of bicycles, and the Forbidden City, which are most likely derived from Beijing city. The elites in every profession -- such as artists, scientists, politicians, and business men – are all congregated in the capital cities; all kinds of museums are located in the capital cities, in which the most precious exhibitions are presented; the food almost all over the country could be tasted in the capital cites. However, there are some critical shortages of major cities that prevent us from studying the distinct, also very important characteristics of a society.

From comparing the major cities in the world, we can find that they are becoming increasing alike, both in the appearance of the cities and in the thoughts of residents. The globalization is the reason behind this phenomenon. The trend of globalization is more and more evident in our lives. Information communication, culture mutual-permeation, and economic interrelation between nations are the proof that similarity will dominate the world. It is now easy to people to go and live in anywhere in the world. Some big cities, in some sense, are not only the confluence places of a certain country but also of the whole world. With the strengthening of global assimilation, many characteristics belong to a certain society are faded in the major cities, but still remains in comparatively small cites and rural areas.

Secondly, in spite of the important position of major cities in a country, the value of other areas in the country should not be overshadowed. Some cities, although currently underdeveloped, have been very significant places in history, while some cities are closely related to the beginning and development of a valuable culture. Those cities incontrovertibly deserve our attention if we want to understand a society more comprehensively.

Now, there is a laudable practice in travelers who want to know more about the outside world that instead of visiting famous and big cities, they choose relatively small cities because the customs and mores of that society is more completely kept there. For one, who hopes to best understand the most important characteristics of a society, the focus on major cities is not enough.

I disagree with the assertion that ‘one can best understand the most important characteristics of a society by studying its major cities.’ Although there is much we can get from major cities about characteristics of a society, ordinary cities and rural area(s) are proved to be at least as same important places(这里的same要不要加the呢?我也不太确定) as major cities for us to study a society.
