A Letter of Demonstration

DearMiss Walder,

Greetings!I am a Chinese student who took GRE this year. Unfortunately by far I couldneither view my scores online nor hear my scores on the telephone.

Tosettle the problem I have got in touch with ETS many times. Each time someonetold me that my scores had not been processed yet and suggested me to wait abit longer. But today when I called ETS again, a man told me that you foundsome “UNUSUAL SIMILARITIES” between my issue work and other published resources. And he alsosuggested me to get in touch with you to demonstrate that I did not memorizeany materials written by others.

I dounderstand that the aim of analytical writing tasks in GER is to show one’s ownlogic and creativity. So I NEVER copied any other’s works but performed the tasks ALLBY MYSELF. In myemail there is also a copy of my issue works that I wrote when I was preparingfor the analytical writing section, which includes an issue work that Ipracticed online on GRE ScoreItNow and other 40 issue works written by myself.

It istrue that one of the two issue tasks that I encountered during the test was onethat I had practiced previously (see Page 14 in the attachment), so I chosethis topic to write on. And I am sure that you can find my test works and mypractice works are almost the same, indicating that they should be written bythe same person. But if you check all my issue works carefully enough, youshould be able to find there is a unique and consistent habit of choosing wordsand phrases, picking up sentence structures, and developing ideas. Consequentlyit is obvious that all these works are written by the same person – that is me!

So ifyou think that I memorized and copied other people’s works for the test, thenall my practice works should be copied from the same person. Can this be true? Absolutelynot! How can a person copy and memorize as many as 40 writing samples from asingle person when he is preparing for a test? If he does, then he must beinsane!

I want to state itagain that I did not copy anything from other people. So I do hope that you canexamine all my practice works carefully and have a second evaluation on my testworks. But if you still fail to offer a reasonable answer to me after the broadreview, then I am going to take some further steps (including lawsuit) toprotect my legal rights!

Thank you for your patience and hope to hear from you soon.

Dear Miss Walder,

I received the decision byBoard of Review concerning my GRE writing several weeks ago. But soon I foundthat there was a terrible misunderstanding about the originality of my responseto the test. So I sent you an email to clarity this problem. Over two weekshave already passed but by far I did not get any information from you. Isuppose you failed to receive my last email so I decide to send it again.

Although there is usually onlyone chance for review, I do hope that you and other members of the Board couldgrant me another chance to reconsider my writing response, not only for astudent who needs his real GRE scores so terribly, but also for justice andfairness. Please check the attachments to the email.

Thank you for your help andhope to hear from you soon.

Sincerely yours,

Chi Feng

Dear Miss Walder,

Thank you for sending me thedecision by Board of Review. But I am afraid that there was a seriousmisunderstanding concerning the originality of my response during the test.Actually it was me who put the works online and I think it is unacceptable tothink that “I copied my own works”.

第二次申诉信(邮件附件):

Dear ETS’ Board of Review,

Greetings! Sorry to bother you again for my GREscores. After contacting with Miss Walder, I found that probably you had amisunderstanding concerning my writing so that you decided to cancel my scores.Here I sincerely apply for your second consideration for the originality of myanalytical writing task (the issue part).

I took my analytical writing test on 8thFebruary, 2010. I know that you found unusual similarities between my issue responseto the test and an article on a website (https://bbs.gter.net/forum.php?mod=viewthread&tid=1059265&highlight).This is absolutely right. But I want to clarity a vital point: it was me who putthe article on the website, which is a forum wherepeople preparing for GRE, TOEFL, IELTS and other exams can communicate withothers and find help. Since both of them were written by myself, there isnothing strange that my response to test and the article on the website werealmost identical.

To demonstrate that I am the original author ofthe article on the website, I would like to provide following evidences:

1.
Theauthor’s name, which you can find on the website, was “fengchi860602”. ActuallyFENG is my family name, CHI is my given name, and 860602 stands for 2ndJune,1986, my birthday. So you can equate the author to me from this point of view.

2.
To login the website, you may use the user’s name “fengchi860602”, and the passwordis “**”. If I am not the author, how could I know the password?

3.
Thisarticle appeared online after my test (8th, February), and you canfind the date was 9th February. So how could I “copy” an article fromthe Internet that never existed online before my test? As a matterof fact, while I was preparing for GRE, I wrote an essay concerning the sametopic as I did during the test (please refer to the materials that I emailed toyou before). After the test I put my practice essay on this website. That iswhy you found “unusual similarities”.

4.
Togetheronline was a schedule concerning my arrangement for preparing. If you refer tothe materials that I emailed to you before, you can find my practice works perfectlycorresponding with the table (both practice dates and issue number). This again demonstratesthat I am the original author.

5.
You mayalso find two writing samples evaluated by ScoreItNow on the website. Again theauthor was me.

The user’sname and password for ScoreItNow were both “ericfeng” (Eric is my English nameand Feng is my family name). Although my account had expired, you may have someway to check the personal information of the account so that you can make surethat the account was mine. I have also sent theconfirmation email from ScoreItNow to you for help. You can find my email address and myname there.

6.
On the websiteI said that I got a band of 6 for writing task in IELTS and got an overall bandof 7.5:

Please check my IELTSscores and my personal information:

I think I have provided adequate evidence toconvince you that I am the original author of the article online. Althoughthe website is not mine, it was nothing wrong of me to put my own works on it. SinceI did not copy other people’s works or ideas, you should not cancel my GRE scores. Pleaseconsider my application seriously.

Thank you for your patience and hope to hearfrom you soon.

Sincerely yours,

Chi Feng
