这个是有关那个scandal的,issue 185,希望大家能指教。
People tend to focus more about celebrities' scandals as they reflect the weaknesses of those celebrities. It seems that some people hold a strong opinion that scandals are useful since they can attract our attention to those people's problems. However, are scandals really useful in our real world?
There is no doubt that scandals let us know the other side of the celebrities that we admire, since sometimes we regard those celebrities as heroes and the only news that we care about is their accomplishments. Consequently, when scandals about a celebrity comes, they provide us with a great opportunity to take a second look at the celebrity. One example about scandals that took place two years ago was a sexual scandal that happened to Edison Chen, a singer who used to be popular in China mainland and Hong Kong. He took pictures that contained lots of sexual material with other famous women singers and those pictures were released somehow. Although Chen apologized as soon as those pictures pervaded online, his reputation declined really fast and people stop buying his albums since those pictures had a terrible effect on teenagers who had a chance to see them, and this outcome is irreversible. This scandal was useful because it focused on Chen's noxious life and reminded people of problems that they had never thought of.
However, if we take too much considerations of a person's scandal, then we are treating him unfairly because we neglect what this person has done before. Another famous sexual scandal happened to Tiger Woods, who secretly meeted with several prositutes. Although this event had an outcome as bad as the one above, it should be treated somewhat differently for two reasons. First of all, although these two scandals are primarily the same, no pictures about details of sexual pictures or videos were released, thus the impact on teenagers were not as great as the first one. Secondly, Tiger Woods is apparently more famous in the world than Edison Chen as Tiger Woods not only stayed in people's eyes longer than Edison Chen, but also won so many titles that his glories cannot be ignored. Even though Woods made such a huge mistake, we still have to say that as a golf professional player, he can be evaluated as one of the greatest. So, we should pay attention to what Woods did before his sexual scandal took place and bisect him.
Scandals, if taken into too much account, have a negative effect for us to know a person comprehensively since considering too much about scandals disturbs us so that we cannot treat a person objectively. Andrew Agassi had a autobiography about himself taking drugs when he was a professional tennis player. This part, considered as a "drug scandal", was spreading out really fast online and lots of Agassi's old fans stop regarding him as a great player since he took drugs. It is true that by admitting that he used drugs before, Agassi's greatness was discounted; however, taking drugs cannot shadow Agassi's winning all 4 grand slams. If people only pay attention to scandals of a celebrity, it is easy to forget considering what that person has done before, thus impeding us from obtaining an objective view about a celebrity who has a peccadillo.
To sum up, the best way to treat a person's scandals is to look at a person's contributions and the impact of his scandals comprehensively. If scandals were taken into too much account, then it is possible that what this person had done before will be ignored, which is not fair because contributions are often more significant than scandals, especially when such mistakes did not have a bad impact on people. We must stay calm when we saw scandals flying toward us because sometimes they may not be absolutely true since journalists cannot be one hundred percent objective, and they may focus more about scandals and did not pay attention to celebrities' achievements. Nevertheless, if we ignore scandals, then we are being too subjective ourselves since we choose not to focus on the flaws of our "heroes", which can disrupt the way we see other people in the future. |
