Issue-153 "Students should bring a certain skepticism to whatever they study. They should question what they are taught instead of accepting it passively."
Should students question everything when they study? In response to this issue, we should analyze the statement comprehensively. The author declares that students should question what they are taught instead of accepting it passively. Admittedly, it is essential and necessary for students to bring a certain skepticism to whatever they study. However, the statement magnifies the skepticism and overstates the importance of questioning.
There is no doubt that bringing skepticism to what they study is fundamental to the education system. Not all what we are taught and what we learn is unassailable. Questioning what we study helps us to intense the desire to study and find the truth of the question. Then this will spark the students immerge themselves in efforts to find the answers to the question and study a lot from the progress. Besides, if the students find obstacles encountered in learning, they will turn to the teacher for help. Obviously, it urges the teachers to question what they have taught their students. As a result, the education is full of skepticism and it will make a significant contribution to social progress. In addition, skepticism is perhaps the most important in the physical science and it is important to keep our minds open to new ideas as well as to prevent us from being unthinking dogmatists without no individuality. If there were no one in the world to question, we might believe that the earth is still flat. Questioning what we are taught often breeds new discovery. As a matter of fact, the advances and progresses of our society depend on these new problem and new thoughts. Consider Galileo, who gave a denial to the theory of velocity of Aristotle and established a foundation for Newton's theoretical system. In short, skepticism is necessary in both daily life and science field.
Despite the virtue of skepticism, I do not accede to the assertion for the reason that it seems to suggest the students that they should bring skepticism to everything they meet. As a matter of fact, excessively questioning about what we learn and what we are taught will result in a counterproductive outcome.
If a student exorbitantly concern about knowledge of what they are taught, he may find that the knowledge is filled with errors, ignoring most of what they learn is correct. Additionally, exorbitantly skepticism may exert an undesirable influence on the personality of students. A student always questioning all the things and knowledge around may possess extreme personalities which will make him arduous to adapt himself to the society. In the science field, if a researcher excessively questions the theories, he or she will become a skeptic and doubt all accepted opinions. As a result, it will seriously block the development of science and technology.
As the case stands, perhaps most importantly, it is the ability of independent thinking that students really need to study. The students who get the knowledge by independent thinking actively participate in the learning process, and this experience makes a deep impression in their mind in respect that they doubt and challenge what they learn independently. Moreover, the students are not going to be students forever. They will make great effort to survive in the society and fulfill their personal targets. Thus, it is of particular importance to cultivate their independent thinking so that by the time they face a problem, their mind won’t freeze with what to be done.
In the final analysis, I consent that students should question what they are taught instead of accepting it passively. However, excessively emphasizing the skepticism will make a counterproductive result. In my view, it is advisable to cultivate the ability of independent thinking of students which enable them to survive in the society and make contributions. |
