2011Department/Institute: BiologySubject Area: Plant and Soil EcologyName of Supervisor: Prof. Dr. Matthias C. RILLIGNumber of positions: 1Project title: Plant pathogens in grassland communities: effects of diversity and phylogenetic patterns in interactionsProject description: We are interested in learning about the role of (fungal) pathogen and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal communities in structuring grassland plant communities. Within this topic, several projects are possible. Project could entail observational (molecular ecology) and experimental (inoculation studies) approaches. One of the key questions we would like to answer is the role of diversity of pathogens, and the phylogenetic patterns of interactions between pathogens and host plants.Key words: community ecology, pathogens, fungi, soil.Academic Requirements:Subject areas of ecology, plant biology, soil science, or mycology. BSc degree only under exceptional circumstances, applicants with MSc degree (research-based) will be preferred. Quantitative skills are necessary (statistics, phylogenetic tools, proficiency in the use of R preferred).Language Requirements:English language is required; German is not required. Doctoral thesis should be written in English. Further Information:http://sites.google.com/site/mycorrhizas/ (English)http://www.biocircle.fu-berlin.de/oekobot/ (German)
