练习ARG 51
JJ高频啊
有点搞不清楚时态问题。
Doctors have long suspected that secondary infections may keep some patients from healing quickly after severe muscle strain. This hypothesis has now been proved by preliminary results of a study of two groups of patients. The first group of patients, all being treated for muscle injuries by Dr. Newland, a doctor who specializes in sports medicine, took antibiotics regularly throughout their treatment. Their recuperation time was, on average, 40 percent quicker than typically expected. Patients in the second group, all being treated by Dr. Alton, a general physician, were given sugar pills, although the patients believed they were taking antibiotics. Their average recuperation time was not significantly reduced. Therefore, all patients who are diagnosed with muscle strain would be well advised to take antibiotics as part of their treatment.”

Before advising antibiotics to the all patients with muscle strain, the evidence given in the argument should be examined from several other angles. The doctor who conducted the study seem to have assumed that taking antibiotics regularly throughout the treatment has accelerated the recuperation of a group of the the muscle injuries patient without examining any other factors which may have affected the results of the study.
First of all, for an study to be accurate, it must be controlled, with a balance between the study and the patients. In the above study , though , we know noting about whether the two group patients are in the secondary infections after severe muscle strain, or they are easily to get the secondary infections. We also don’t know some necessary information just about healthy history, age, gender, antibiotics sensitivity, and so forth. Further, if the first group patients in the study were quite all young and were more strong , they will recover more quickly of course. If their muscle strain or infection is more slight than the second group, then the
quick recuperation might have nothing to do with antibiotics and might simply be a indication of their general health.
The same is true of the second group of patient. We might also ask : what about the general gender? Do all patient in two group belong to one gender and the the two group patient are from different gender ? perhaps they first group are males as compared with the second group patients are female. If this were the case, the study ‘s results would be questionable, at best .
Furthermore, even if antibiotics is useful to the secondary infections , what about the the first infections ? the argument says noting about the infections effect on the first infections, common knowledge tells me that not all patients with muscle strain will get the secondary infections, and the author didn’t send more information about the treatment condition of antibiotics to other muscle strain, so it therefore cannot make the recommendation that all patients diagnosing with muscle strain would be well advised to take antibiotics in their treatment. Perhaps there is some wrong with the patients for the first infections. Perhaps some patients is easily to feel malaise after taking antibiotics. The point is ,a generalization about the first infections and other muscle strain could not be made from the study done on secondary infections, without ruling out such possibilities , it might make antibiotics inadvisable for some patients.
What if we consider some important condition in the argument? First doctors which specializes in sports medicine and the other doctor is a general physician, different treatment experience and ability of they two doctors will be sure to influence these two groups of patients. And what about the sugar pill , it is possible that it will adversely affect on the second groups patients, thus it is too vague to be meanful to affirm that antibiotics is just the separate element for the treatment.
In conclusion, any legitimate experiment must be strictly accurated about the condition of patients and doctors , and send a entire report about muscle strain. This study fails to do that.
