11"All nations should help support the development of a global university designed to engage students in the process of solving the world's most persistent social problems."
I believe a global university will be benefit for solving the world’s most persistent social problems. It can help nations know and respect each other, advance world peace and provide multi-angle mode of thinking, global perspective as well. However, in the process of solving global problems, if every country only focuses on their own interest, it will be difficult to actually solve the problem, but will aggravate contradictions and disputes arising.
Firstly, a global university will offer a platform of mutual understanding, mutual respect, and contribute to world peace. For example, the Olympic Games 2008 and the World Expo in Shanghai 2010 made so many people around the world besides our country know a real China, whose economic is taking-off and develops so fast, if you never come to China, you will never know it vividly. When they saw The Bird’s Nest and The water Cube in the National Stadium, they felt surprised of the building technology and aesthetic style. And some of the international friends interviewed said: “I would never believe what China now is like, if I haven’t come here personally, it is so beautiful!” What’s more, they also had a feeling of the hospitality and friendliness of the Chinese people, and it will certainly help Chinese people gain favorable impression and respect from all over the world. If we compare China to a global university, it can offer a good opportunity for each nation a close contact, acquainted, respected with the others, and it will certainly contribute to world peace.
Then, a global university will provide multi-angle thinking, explore new ideas. Take Western Society and China as examples, Western Society emphasizes individualism, while China emphasizes collectivism. One of my friend from American give me an impression that he wants to do whatever he wants to do and it’s none of anybody’s business, and he’s always been very proud of his country’s culture, believing every American citizen lives a happy and free life, also it’s hardly for him to imagine how his life will be if he has to think about the “collective interest”. But sometimes I think the “collective spirit” does work. For instance, when some kind of disaster happens, all the Chinese people, including the army and citizens from all walks just devote money and whatever they own to the victims, sometimes even themselves. I don’t think free American people can so this. So individualism and collectivism, which do you think is better? Students from different places with diverse backgrounds will make you clearer in these issues and always the exact usefulness just comes from these differences and balances between them.
Thirdly, a global university can provide a global perspective for solving the world’s most persistent social problems. Such as environmental pollution, global warming, climate change and so on, all these problems involve global scale, so their solutions need broad horizons. For example, with rapidly developing economic, there are larger carbon dioxide emissions in China, influencing the global climate, so China has to take measures to reduce carbon dioxide emissions for protecting the environment for nations all over the world, instead of only focusing on its own economic development. Doing so will make benefit for all human beings in the earth.
However, if all students from each nation only focus on their own countries’ interest when solving the problems, the issues will never be figured out, like Palestinian-Israeli negotiations on Middle East issues. Oppositely, it will intensify conflicts and rise disputes.
In sum, a global university will provide multi-angle mode of thinking, a global perspective, better for nations acquainted with each other, and contribute to world peace, but effectively solving the world’s most persistent problems need students from each nation see issues in overall situation, putting aside their own behalf first.
