12.4——独立作业

Do you agree with the following statement? It was easierto achieve success in the past than it is today.

I don’t agree with either “easier”or “more difficult” statement aboutsuccess. It has no means of comparison between now and the past on whether it iseasier or harder to achieve success for success can be measured only in relation to thegoals one set for oneself. It might be as presumptuous as onesays that one might get a higher score in the GRE test this year than who didin decades ago by saying that it is more likely to be a success nowadays.

Many people might refutethat various factors, which mainly shift over time, would affect the resultduring the process of achieving success. They believe that success is an easierachievement nowadays when factors like fortune, resources and informationavailable are taken into consideration. Admittedly, these are all conditions tosuccess. Whether one is likely to get timely information and rich resources iscrucial to the outcome of one’s activities. From these aspects, the modern life, filled with plentiful and easily-accessible resources with the assistance ofinternet, seems to benefit those crave for success. Yet others might argue thatwith the increasing population, opportunities or resources owned by per-personmight stay unchanged as the past, if not decrease. These people hold that tosucceed today is much more an incredible job than it was.

But I think peopleare focusing on the wrong question. After all, what is crucial tosuccess? Is there a universal gauge to judgethe hardness of success?

Success, as far as I am concerned, is a thing far moreindividual-oriented than being influenced by extrinsic factors. That meanswhether one can achieve success is largely decided by oneself rather than theera he/she is in. Being a success is easy or hard can only be measured accordingthe individual’s effort, will-power or perseverance. We cannot tell which iseasier, to invent the electric light or the computer, the same is true that wecannot get a rush conclusion that it is easier to achieve success now than inthe past, or vice versa.

In the pursuit of knowledge, there is no difference between simple anddifficult task. If one is with strong will, all things that seems difficultwill finally found being easily to be solved; whereas one is not willing tolearn, even the simplest things will become difficult. To achieve success isquite the same with the pursuit of knowledge.

12月6日 independent writing :
Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Young people should try several different jobs before they take a long term career.3 ?

The shortest route between two places, being a common sense no one would deny, is the one with little detour. Yet ironically, those who are fond of traveling would show no hesitation to tell you a dramatically contrary theory, that the longer the journey is, the more scenery they enjoy.

Life is like a journey, whereas the career is the route we chose towards the destination. Which is better, to rush to death, our common destination, as quickly as possible by taking a unchanged career with little surprise and expectation, or to launch an adventure by taking different jobs  which will bring them brand new horizons, unceasingly vitality and creativity? A primary reason for choosing the second one is that during our life

Trying different jobs is also a good way to guide the youth to find in what area they are truly interested and have talent. In our job-intensive era, thousands of walks of life are provided to us. Whether to be a salesman or a teacher, whether to work in the government or the company, with numerous choices resounded in our life, now the difficulties lies in making a decision, to be more exactly, making a right decision. It is like that one gets candies with various flavor, only if one taste some of them can they tell which is his or her favorite. The same is true that only after one has tried several different jobs can one find the job he or she would devote the whole life to.

If one recklessly chooses a job and sticks to it, however, the long term job might turn out to be a long term torture or a life long regret.

12月7  independent writing

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? A job with more vacation time but a low salary is better than a job with a high salary but less vacation time.

One cares  more about vacation than salary or vice versa reflecting the attitude one holds toward life. I am the last person to put money on the top priority.

“All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy” is an old cliché. But it is nonetheless possibly true because that work without entertainment is colorless and painful. One of my friends, who are envied by many for his 10 times as much as ours income, once complaint to me in great suffering that he kept on working and with little time spending on family or friends, less to say on any forms of entertainments. The over-stressful job almost depraved of all his spare time  including short periods of shopping. Without consumption, the huge amount of salary turns out to be meaningless figure on the bank account.

Yet job with little vacation is of greater harm for those workaholics whose major concern might not be salary as they just seeking job satisfaction from it. They have great passion for chasing schedule. They abandon themselves in the over-loading assignments and quite enjoy the process of solving problems one after another. This pattern does run smoothly not until one day they wake up and begin to be aware that something goes wrong with their life. Their job ability is beginning to wane due to overworking; they fall far behind  the peers as they plug themselves to the job without noticing the changes happened in each passing day; they are estranged and isolated even by their family and intimate friends for decreasing communication . All these are due to one single problem: they destroyed the balance of life.

Life style, as the ecology, needs balance. Only enough vacation can ensure a better and healthy life which money can never purchase. Do we have enough time for relationships, sleep, self-care, sport, reading, and other important parts to keep life in balance? It is the high time that we should reflect on this question and make our own choice. As for me, job with less salary, more vacation and more brilliance is undoubtedly preferred.

12.8 independent writing
Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? In the busy and crowded world today, we should not expect people to be polite to each other.

It seems to be irrefutable that politeness is a crucial part, if not the most important requirement of smoothing interpersonal relationship. Yet what seems to be true might turn out to be otherwise after a second thought.
Whether politeness is really a necessarity in the busy and crowded world today? It might be presumptuous to answer the question before providing a reasonable definition of politeness.

Politeness, what we are most familiar, is expressed in various forms like a big smile, “thank you, sorry” pattern dialogue, hospitality and consideration. One has been taught to be polite since childhood and is supposed to be friendly and never lose one’s temper in adulthood. Have you ever had such an experience: you have to force a studied smile although you were extremely sad, you pretend to agree to an utterly disagreeable suggestion, or you reluctantly constrain yourself to accept an invitation you dislike? In the name of politeness, we suffered.

Politeness is undoubtedly a virtue, but it should not be a requirement. To put it simple, the spirit of volunteers, for example, is highly appreciated because it brings a harmonious society, yet it might be absurd if we expect everyone to serve in the nursing house voluntarily by scarifying their own time. So no reason should we expect everyone to be polite. Otherwise, an unreasonable expectation does bring much more pains when we are treated impolitely.  As we take politeness for granted, we may be accustomed to it and tend to blame those who behave otherwise. After all, high expectation leads to the feeling of being hurt.

We keep ourselves and others suffering by imposing the so-called politeness on our behavior.  Interesting enough, privileges are often given to the elite. We ignore the impoliteness of those who gain great achievements.  Steve Jobs, a man of notoriously bad temper, for instance, is praised as strong personal characteristic. I think it is a preferable way to appreciate everyone’s distinct manner as we give tolerance to Steve Jobs.

12.9  independent writing

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Movies and televisions should always show audience  that good people are rewarded and bad people are punished.

Admittedly, one vital role of TV and movie plays in our life is education. By characterizing a model of great virtues and all-around strengths, it sets one or more examples for the audiences. In this way, it is supposed to tell a virtue-rewarding pattern story to educate the audiences in behaving appropriately.

Yet, TV programs and movies, should not always strictly conform to the rewarding pattern. Have been developing along with our increasingly psychological requirements, films are far more than just being educating approach. Indeed, besides education, various genres including the psychological movies, the horror film, the comedy do bring us freshness and enjoyment by providing a soft and relieving story, thought-provoking in depicting a dark side of one’s personality or reflecting the reality by mirroring a frequent occurring phenomenon in the society.

More often than not, those which enjoyed highly appreciation do not always belong to the rewarding and punishing category. Leon, my favorite movie for instance, lingered on my mind for several years due to the regrettable death of the hero at the end of the story. Its everlasting effect arises from nothing but the audiences’ pity and agony for the hero. Movie or TV series ended with an undeserving destiny of the characters both good and bad, in fact, lead us to a critical thinking on whether the system of the society is reasonable or what hinders us towards a better and healthier life.

Another point worth notice is that it is hard to make a clear distinction from bad and good people as one is by no means utterly good or bad. Not all the movies depicts extremely virtuous or vicious characters, instead, the fact is that a successfully characterized person is of complicit personality. One might be selfish, nevertheless he or she would make sacrificed under certain circumstances. A quite popular plot is that a relentless murder might show affection and consideration whereas a well-known gentleman turns out to be not so gentle after we get a fully analysis of his unconscious ego.

TV or movies, after all,  deriving from our life and in turn helping us get a better understanding of the meaning of life, do not necessarily disguise in the unrealistic scene that good people are rewarded and bad people are punished. An alternative way, removing the mask and showing the true colors of life itself, is proved to be more successful with the top box office movies achieved by some talented artists.
