Issue 203:
203"The best way to understand the character of a society is to examine the character of the men and women that the society chooses as its heroes or its heroines."
1. Introduction:
The examination of heroes or heroines of a society is probably a good way to understand a society, but from my viewpoint, it is not the best way.
2. Admittedly, sometimes it is one of effective methods to understand the character of a society by examining its heroes and heroines.
3. However in some cases, the characters of some heroes or heroines can reflect little of the characters of a society. They are regarded as heroes or heroines just because they have some unique features or abilities.
4. Also, some people are decorated as heroes/heroines by governments or organizations not for their respectable characters but for the interest of these government or originations.
Therefore it is unlikely to comprehend a society from these heroes/heroines.
5. It is critical to investigate all of the important aspects of a society if one wants to grasp the character of a society, rather than just inspecting its heroes/heroines.
6. Conclusion: Learning from heroes/heroines maybe, is a good way but definitely not a best way to understand the character of a society.
Issue 59
59"Too much emphasis is placed on role models. Instead of copying others, people should learn to think and act independently and thus make the choices that are best for them."
1. Introduction:
Learning from role models is important and necessary, esp. in current society where efficiency is one of critical factors. Copying from these models is helpful for us to save money and time. Yet it is unadvisable to totally copy others without independent thinking.
2. Learning the experiences of role models is time-saving and money-saving for people, organizations or countries that pursue high-speed development in their concerns.
3. On the contrary, to think and act independently without introducing advanced experiences can enlarge the distance between us and our competitors.
4. Meanwhile, only introducing experiences from role models without independent thinking or action will leave one to lag behind the competitors forever, not mention to surpass them.
5. Conclusion.
Issue 138
138"Only through mistakes can there be discovery or progress."
1.
Introduction
Learning from mistake is a helpful way, but never a unique way for us to make progress or discovery. We can learn a lot form success.
2.
Admittedly, mistake or failure can provides us much information which can lead us to progress or discovery.
3.
However one can also learn a lot from success.
3.1
Success can bring people encouragement and help on to keep in good status for new progress and discovery.
3.2
Some experiences from successful things can be used directly for next progress or discovery.
4. Conclusion
Arguement
Argument 3
3. The following appeared in a newspaper article about law firms in the city of Megalopolis.
"In Megalopolis, the number of law school graduates who went to work for large, corporate firms declined by 15 percent over the last three years, whereas an increasing number of graduates took jobs at small, general practice firms. Even though large firms usually offer much higher salaries, law school graduates are choosing to work for the smaller firms most likely because they experience greater job satisfaction at smaller firms. In a survey of first-year students at a leading law school, most agreed with the statement that earning a high salary was less important to them than job satisfaction. This finding suggests that the large, corporate firms of Megalopolis will need to offer graduates more benefits and incentives and reduce the number of hours they must work."
1.Introduction
2.The author cannot convince me that small firms are more favorable than large firms in the past years by just showing the decrease or increase of the number./ It is also possible that many large, corporate firms moved from this area, and therefore most graduates have no choice but to work in small and general firms. /
3. The survey is inconvincible by only selecting one law school in this area.
4. Even we assume that the survey of this law school can reflect the opinion of graduates of law schools in this area. The result of survey is doubtable it is a survey of first-year students, rather than senior students who have clear understanding about their job in the future.
5. Job satisfaction includes many factors, such as working environment, relationship between colleagues, salary etc. Not just offering more benefits and reduces the working hours
6. Conclusion
Argument 2.
2. The following appeared in a letter sent by a committee of homeowners from the Deerhaven Acres to all homeowners in Deerhaven Acres.
"Seven years ago, homeowners in nearby Brookville community adopted a set of restrictions on how the community's yards should be landscaped and what colors the exteriors of homes should be painted. Since then, average property values have tripled in Brookville. In order to raise property values in Deerhaven Acres, we should adopt our own set of restrictions on landscaping and house painting.
1.
Introduction
2.
The average property values increased in the past seven year’s dose not mean the increase of practical value. There are other factors contribute this increase, eg. Inflation.
3.
Even the market factor is excluded, the author can still convince me that it is these constrictions that lead to the improvement of average property value in B.
4.
Even we assume that these constrictions are the reason of improvement of the values, there is probability that D and B are so different that the measures taken by B is not so effective in D.
5.
Conclusion
Argument 1
1.
The following appeared in a memorandum written by the vice president of Nature's Way, a chain of stores selling health food and other health-related products.
"Previous experience has shown that our stores are most profitable in areas where residents are highly concerned with leading healthy lives. We should therefore build our next new store in Plainsville, which has many such residents. Plainsville merchants report that sales of running shoes and exercise clothing are at all-time highs. The local health club, which nearly closed five years ago due to lack of business, has more members than ever, and the weight training and aerobics classes are always full. We can even anticipate a new generation of customers: Plainsville's schoolchildren are required to participate in a 'fitness for life' program, which emphasizes the benefits of regular exercise at an early age."
1.
Introduction
2.
Previous experience maybe not applicable in nowadays. (e.g. There had not so many health-food store in the past yeas in other areas. However there are more and more stores opened these years)
3.
Weight training and aerobics classes are popular in P. area dose not mean health food or other health related products popular.
4.
Without sufficient evidence, it is not convincible that the new generation of customers in P area has interest in “Fitness for life” program.
5.
Conclusion
