40"Scholars and researchers should not be concerned with whether their work makes a contribution to the larger society. It is more important that they pursue their individual interests, however unusual or idiosyncratic those interests may seem."
My issue:
I-40
Although interest is the best teacher, but scholars and researchers ' works are not only for themselves which belong to the whole human kind and society. So scientists should do researches with interests, meanwhile considering the contribution of their works to the society.
As we all know that interest is the best teacher. For scholars and researchers, interest is the paramount impetus of research. Without it, we could hardly enjoy the luxurious and convenient modern life brought about by achievements in science, motivated by interest. Thomas Edison could never invent so many useful things without interest. In the thousands of nights when he was looking for the most proper material for the filament, interest was the light of his heart in the endless dark nights, encouraging him, and directed him to find the way to final success.
Furthermore, what scientists are pursuing is to explore the unknown frontier of the world, which means scientists themselves are also not very sure about what they would discover. So no mention that what impact on society their discoveries will have. Actually, most discoveries were born by accidents, or were the byproducts in the process of other researches. Marie Curie did not well prepare and intentionally decided to discover the element of radium. However, it is true that what she discovered enormously contributed to our society.
Yet scientists can not pass the buck just because of their unawareness of what they would discover. There are two sides of every issue. Scientist developed the nuclear technique in order to make a new energy for the world, but the technique was also used into nuclear weapon at the same time. Given this, scholars and researchers must take responsibility of their works which might bring possible dangers to society. Thus scientist should not do controversial researcher for their own interest with the social subsidization.
In the contrary, scholars need avoid to be secular utility generally. They could not do pure work, once they pay too much attention to the social effort of their works in a short run. Real scholars are honor-bound to seek only the truth, and not pursue some ulterior agenda. Real researchers should be self -critical, carefully inspecting their own work from a skeptical point of view, to find weakness and possible ways of overcoming them. Karl Marx spent almost 40 years to write the Capital. And his work has had a profound influence on our society today.
In a word, real scientists devote themselves to researches which would contribute our society. Interests are their paramount impetus, and contributions are their final intention.

这一段的例子和中心意思之间好像没有很好得链接:感觉例子里强调的是40years(很长时间)和资本论重大影响,主题句是强调追求真理而非世俗需要

In a word, real scientists devote themselves to researches which would contribute our society. Interests are their paramount impetus, and contributions are their final intention.

语言:很精练,意思明确,偶尔有高级词汇飘过,很给力~
第五段的主题和例子之间逻辑上不大合理
主题观点明确,简洁明了;各个段落的论证层次也很清晰~
