40"Scholars and researchersshould not be concerned with whether their work makes a contribution to thelarger society. It is more important that they pursue their individualinterests, however unusual or idiosyncratic those interests may seem."
翻译:对待学者和研究人员不用考虑他们的工作是否对整个社会有所贡献。重要的是所做的研究符合自己的兴趣,哪怕看起来非常怪异和奇怪也没关系。
What is the real purpose for scientists topractice researches? According to the statement given above, scientists shouldfocus on their own interests which are the propulsion for them to achieve greatsuccess, even though these interests are extremely deviant or idiosyncraticwithout concerning the contribution to current society. However, I tend toconcede that every researcher is a member of human beings so that their worksbelong to humanity and society. As a result our scientists require tocontribute to the development of society with the help of their passion.
First of all, it is undeniable that theposition of interests and passions are absolutely irreplaceable for one to keepdoing experiments which need a long period of time, especially in some boringand unprofitable realms. Without it, we could hardly enjoy the luxurious andconvenient modern life brought about achievements in science---achievementsmotivated by interests. Admittedly, many technological developments during the last century have helped reducehuman suffering. Consider, for instance, technology that enables computers tomap Earth’s geographical features from outer space. This technology allows usto locate lands that can be cultivated for feeding malnourished people in thethird-world countries. And, few would disagree that humanity is the beneficiaryof the myriad of the twentieth-century innovations in medicine and medicaltechnology—from prostheses and organ transplants to vaccines and lasers.
However, Having research totally according with theresearcher’s interests probably lead to some very dangerous outcome for thereason that the pursuit of individual passions byscholars and researchers should not consist of treacherous and evil intereststhat will be no beneficial to the development of humanity but a waste of timeand resources, or even damage the society as a whole. Recently, the alarm about the problem of theuse of genetic technologies on human beings have caused wide public concern, and understandably so. With nuclear energy threatening global catastrophe andwith so many other technological advances visibly damaging the quality of life, who would wish to have scientists tamper with man’s inner nature? Indeed, fearof such manipulation may arouse even more anxiety than fear of death. As amatter of cause, there are still conventions, moral and ethic commitments thatscientists must obey.
Inaddition, Because of growing concern over the negative effects of technology,it is necessary that steps should be called for to plan and guide its futuredirection. Here are a few examples of the measures that might be taken: thepolitical system must exert more effective control over technology, it cannotbe left simply to economic considerations of the market; better means must befound to anticipate the consequences, both intended and unintended, oftechnology; and more reliable information and analysis about technologicaldevelopments must be available to citizens at large.
To sum up, from the evidence discussed above, it canbe concluded that scholars and researchers should be encouraged to explore therealms they are interested in deeply. But it is based on that their works willmake contributions to the advance of society, or at least not obstruct. |
