For Better or Worse
The 21st century is a time of innovations and challenges. With an oil shortage looming on the horizon, scientists are now exploring alternative energy sources to replace fossil fuels. Once their efforts are successful, conflicts over oil will be a thing of the past. In addition, genetic engineering will be widely applied in both medicine and agriculture. Although this new technology has incited controversy, fear will gradually dissipate as the public becomes more accepting of it.
While humans make advances in some areas, they are always threatening the existence of natural resources. As agriculture encroaches upon woodlands, plants and animals die out in droves due to loss of habitats. The ozone layer, vital for our survival, is being depleted at an alarming rate. Efforts to salvage nature will be fruitless as long as the economy is put first. Will the 21st century be the summit of scientific achievement as well as the doom of mankind? Only time will tell.

1. get married时用:for richer or poorer, for better or worse, we will stay/stick together
in a larger meaning 广义上 表示in good conditions or in bad conditions
through thick and thin=no matter what it means

2. 启示录
Revelations----the book of Revelations

Karon :it would certainly be both, because it is always a way we works out.

开始讲文章,赖世雄说这是篇上乘的文章,Karon说这篇有点难,所以先start by learning the vocabularies and the idioms

is hard to
meet the challenges

all the old systems need to be renovated
4. oil shortage

好短语to loom means to appear and be threatening
it's not here yet but it's getting closer
With the deadline of application looming on the horizon, students are particularly busy.

explore=look into=try out

alternative=sth. different from what we were using now right now, we are using electricity, oil, actually the main thing they are thinking of is oil.A lot of electricity comes from oil, originally.

Soon we will not have enough oil, there is an oil shortage that's getting closer, and scientists are now discussing, they are looking into/ trying out all kinds of different kinds of energy sources as we can use instead of fossil fuels that is petroleum.

=oil shortage approaching
petrol()=gasoline()

5. this sentence is assuming that we are
going to be able to solve
the problem, but on the other hand we have to solve the problem, because someday we will not have oil, we must come up with another answer.

6. after they have found some replacement for fossil fuels, then we will no longer fight over oil.
conflict=a fight
we will not be able to use oil as an excuse for waging war,it will be a thing of the past(sth. that happens before the history but cannot happen anymore)

to wage wars on/against.. country发动战争

have conflicts/qurral/disagreements over... ...

7. apply to/ in.. 应用
8. to incite 煽动
to dissipate means to slowly disappear
controversy is simliar to conflict or sth that people feel very strongly about and don't agree over.
the public becomes more accepting of it= they think it is OK and allow it to go on.

In spite of this disagreement, people will slowly not be afraid of it anymore, because they will see the benefits of it. eg. maybe we will no longer have sth like hemophilia, which is 血友病(不能轻易碰撞)
gradually=step by step/ little by little
to be accepting of sth..

9. While =though
to come into being=to come into existence.(重要!)
The first radio came into existence about
100 years ago.

10.(常用)in droves=in a large number
eg.my hair is coming out in droves头发大把大把地掉下来
as=when
to encroach upon 固定用法:

11. vital=extremely important
if we don't have it, we cannot live.
In order for us to keep living, we have to have an intact ozone layer.
intact完整的
deplete=destroy/use up
at an alarming rate
eg. crime is increasing at an alarming rate in this area.
发展速度越来越快,以后就可以用... develops at an alarming rate.

12. salvage nature= save /protect nature.
your efforts will be fruitless=doomed 注定失败的= in vain
Karon: Here is a major problem that I just think about every country has faced on the ...and that is when you are trying to become wealthy, then you sometimes forget about some really important things like nature, so as long as you only care about money, you care about economic success, then you are
never going to
make much progress trying to save nature, your efforts will come to nothing/fail.

13..... So the 21 th could be two things: we achieve a lot of things and science but we also meet our own end.
summit 高峰
doom灭亡=meet our end
he is doomed to failure/fail
Such a hard working man is bound to succeed.

The 21st century is a time of studying abroad. With the deadline of application looming on the horizon, students are particularly busy selecting schools and writing essays. Once their efforts are successful, conflicts over the feasibility of studying abroad will be a thing of the past.  In addition, the experience and statistics will be widely applied to the application next year. Athough this new tide has incited controversy , misgivings will be gradually dissipate as the public becomes more accepting of it.

The Night before a Mid-Term

Josh had an important mid-term exam to study for and he was fully aware that he should pull an all-nighter. Unfortunately, Josh was obsessed with reading a Spiderman comic book. He just couldn't put it down. Right as the story was getting to an exciting part, his mother suddenly opened his door, practically scaring the pants off of him.

Josh tried to stash the comic under his notebook, but it was too late — he was caught red-handed. His mother not only took the comic book away but also threatened to tear it up into a million pieces. Josh begged his mother not to destroy it because the comic belonged to his classmate. His mother told him the only way to save Spiderman was to ace his mid-term tomorrow.

赖世雄写完啦,Karon 说:here we go~ 表示我们搞定啦~

Karon 版本
Josh had an important mid-term exam to study for, but he just couldn't bring himself to buckle down and study for it. It wasn't that history was really that hard, or that he disliked it. The problem seems to be ...habit, pure and simple. He'd fallen into a pattern of just not being able to really hit the books until there was just enough time to get through the material once... if he stayed up all night. It was only eight p.m.,so he started reading his favorate novel, Lu Dingji, just then his mom burst into his room. She had caught him red-handed, and a long —— and very tiresome——lecture followed. But would he change his deeply engrained habit? Not in response to yet another long lecture, he wouldn't, Josh thought to himself.

What Success Means to Me

Many people regard wealth symbol of success, but this isn't always true. There are other indicators that also define success.

The first of three, knowledge equals to power and in my opinion, it as well as means success. Knowledgeable people cannot only use that they've learned to encounter difficulties, but also have better thinking of the world around them. Second, people who have true friendships are successful. Our friends are valuable and real friends will stand us up and arrive at our rescue whenever we are in trouble. Last but not least, health is a necessary factor of success, too. Only with good health, we can enjoy life. Save some time to consider the things that bring happiness to your life. When you possess these things, no matter big or small, you are truely successful.

Karon
Many people view wealth as the most important index of success, but I don’t necessarily agree. There are other ways to define success.

First, knowledge is power, and in my opinion, that makes it an indicator of success. Knowledgeable people can use what they know both to deal with the difficulties they encounter in life and to better appreciate the world around them. Second, people who maintain true and lasting friendships are, in my opinion, successful people. Friends are valuable to us; true friends will come to rescue us when we are in need. Finally, health is a necessary ingredient of success as well. Only if we are in good health can we enjoy life. Now and then, we should pause to consider the things to bring happiness. If you possess the three things just list it, in whatever quantity, you are a truly successful person.

范文:

Often times, people regard wealth as the only way to measure one’s success. But there are additional ways to see oneself and others as successful.

Sitting back and never learning anything new is a sign of being a failure in life. But, if you make improving your mind a top priority, you are successful by any measure. Once you've achieved your educational goals, you must spread what you've learned around. Friends are also symbolic of a person's success. It isn't the number of friends, but the quality that really counts. Having people in your life you can depend on in a time of crisis is better than any amount of money. A healthy mind and body is the final piece of the puzzle, as it shows the world that you want to live your life to the fullest. When you have knowledge, friends, and a body that is fit, you are a successful person.

often time 往往
make sb. a top priority.
by any measure用任何尺度
to be symbolic of=to be symbol of

Brain Food
20101129

Oatmeal may not sound as appealing as a greasy ham and egg sandwich smothered in mayonnaise, but research shows that it can have profound benefits on the way your brain functions. By slowly releasing the natural sugars within, oatmeal can _speed up(1)_ the activity of your brain, stabilize your mood, aid in concentration, and help you recall information. Digging into a bowl of oatmeal while _on(2)_ your way to school or work may not be easy, but it will give you a head start on your day.

Besides oatmeal, there are plenty of other foods that can be just as _beneficial(3)_ to your brain. As everyone knows, an apple a day keeps the doctor away, but apples can also protect the functioning of your brain. The antioxidants _found(4)_ in them are said to prevent Alzheimer's disease and boost oxygen supply by helping the lungs function better as well.

Even the carton of milk that you have at breakfast may make you smarter. _Rich(5)_ in calcium, milk influences the release of chemicals that pass information from nerve cell to nerve cell in your brain. Without these chemicals, using your brain efficiently would be out of the question_(6)_.

Food is fuel for your body. _no matter(7)_ what you eat, good or bad, it will help you go. But just like a car, the quality of gas you put in will affect its overall performance.

Wash and Read

After a demanding day, nothing is as relaxing as soaking in a tub of soapy water while reading a novel. You towel off your fingers before carefully turning each page. Suddenly you lose your grip, _dropping(1)_ your novel into the bathtub. Within a fraction of a second, it is ruined and you're left with a soggy mess.

This tragic end to your book could have been avoided completely _had(2)_ the book been manufactured with technology used in the production of DuraBooks. Developed by Melcher Media, DuraBooks are tough, waterproof, and the most revolutionary _breakthrough(3)_ in the publishing industry in years. The trick in producing a waterproof novel _lies(4)_ in finding a binding that can withstand being submerged. When most bindings hit water, they _dissolve(5)_. The only way to produce a waterproof book is to develop a water-resistant binding.

Other than the bathtub reader, who else would benefit _from(6)_ a waterproof book? Cooks in kitchens could easily wipe away sauces and spills. Auto enthusiasts could flip through a repair manual without fear of leaving behind oily fingerprints. Scuba divers could even _identify(7)_ various species of marine life by looking at a picture from a book rather than relying on their memory. Just like the number of books, the uses for DuraBooks are endless.

Anger Management
20101201

Everyone gets upset from time to time. You wouldn't be human if you didn't experience moments of irritation. Anger is a natural _response(1)_ to unpleasant situations, such as frustration, pain, or loss. But if your temper gets _out of (2)_ control, it can cause problems in many areas of your life. The only way to control anger is to understand it.

Anger _varies(3)_ from those small irritating things that make you say bad words to an all-out rage that makes you want to punch a wall. This fury may be _caused(4)_ by something you see, do, or experience. Even thinking about problems can push you past your boiling _point(5)_. When you become enraged, your heart rate and blood pressure shoot up. Hormone levels, especially _that(6)_ of adrenaline (肾上腺素), also increase and can make your body shake, face redden, and muscles tighten.

Getting _rid(7)_ of the anger is where the problems may come in. Trying to ignore it doesn't always work and can actually do more harm _(8)_ good. By trying to forget about your anger, you may end up pushing it deep inside and turning it in on yourself. Learning how to let people know that you're mad _in(9)_ a calm and cool manner is the healthiest way to express anger. If your feelings aren't about a person, but a thing, taking a deep breath and counting until you're calm can help _avoid(10)_ many bad situations. It's impossible to eliminate all the people and things that anger you. All you can do is learn to manage your feelings and not let them manage you.
