TOPIC: ISSUE138 - "Only through mistakes can there be discovery or progress."

The author considers that if one wants to be success, making mistakes is the only method. However, the author's opinion has gone to some extreme. Although making mistakes plays a significant role in making discovery, but focus too much attention on mistakes may prevent people from achieve their goal.

First and foremost, mistakes can help people realize the problems with their approaches. As Thomas Edison said:’ I failed my way to success.'' For the purpose of finding materials of filament for electronic lamp Thomas Edison tried countless kinds of materials and suffers from a large amount of failures. It is his persistence and his experience of mistakes that make him discover the suitable filament and invented electronic lamps. Failure can help people rule out wrong methods and lead people to make the right decision.

With regard to a broader impact, mistakes contribute to the development of mankind. Take the field of science as an example, German-born American theoretical physicist Einstein proved the limitations of Newton's classic mechanics and revolutionized modern thought on the nature of space and time. His theory formed a theoretical base for the exploration of atomic energy and gained international recognition. If scientists apply Newton's classic mechanics rather than Einstein's theory of relativity to their research, our world will not have made so many achievements. A mistake sometime

However, it is abnormal for a man to make mistakes all the time. Too many mistakes are a barrier to progress because making mistakes costs much time.
Imagine when you are working on a math paper, you may spend more than one day if you keep making mistakes, while you just need to spend only an hour without making mistakes. Thus making mistakes will slower your study process. In sum, life is too short, and we don't have enough time to think over and correct our mistakes again and again, thus to achieve our ultimate goal. Since making mistakes does not necessarily bring success and it may become a pretext for one's failure, we have to be wary and responsible to make as fewer mistakes as possible.

In addition, most discoveries are based on previous theories. For a striking example, the invention of satellite is based on the basic theory of gravity, which was discovered by Newton. Without it, scientists may spend a lot of years doing research on it, thus we cannot watch the broadcast of the World Cup at home today, and either can we use mobile phones for communication. Also Newton established his theory on ancient scientists’ fruit. As he aptly put it," If I can see farther, it is because I stand on the shoulder of giants."
Without former results, our world cannot be as advanced as it is now since everything goes back to the basics without using former theories.

Last but not the least, success and failure can both attribute to progress. It is unwise to pay too much attention on whether we have made mistakes. Instead, thinking over what we have learned from our experience can make success more likely.

To conclude, making mistakes is helpful, but careful reflection of one's experience is the key of progress.
