40. Scholars and researches should not be concerned with whether their work makes a contribution to the larger society. It is more important that they pursue their individual interests, however unusual or idiosyncratic those interests may seem.
During the hard and boring work time when the researchers cannot exactly see the final results of their great effort, working as the primary and utmost driving which encourage and stimulate scholars and researchers to keep on cerebrating and trying, individual's interests actually play an crucial role in the process of effective creation and favorable development. However, this process, in fact, needs to be conducted and regulated by society moral, national laws and individuals' responsibility.
The final outcomes of researcher's effort are unpredictable so that no evidence can be given to confirm the practicability of the outcomes before researchers draw the final conclusion. Common sense and precedent experience tells us that research is an unforeseeable seeking process during which unexpected situation can occur and hence lead to an inapprehensible results. However, no matter how incomprehensible the results are, they cannot be ruled out or cast away. Because whether the results can contribute to the society are not determined by present people but by the people in future society. In medieval Europe, Galileo Galilei, the famous Italian astronomer who played a critical role in Scientific Revolution, analyzed the astronomy data collected by himself and arrived at the conclusion that Sun, not Earth, was the center of the Universe. Most people at that age failed to believe this theory was correct. However, it is one of the most contribution to the modern science and thus to the development of human history. There are many similar examples just like this one, such as the Big bang theory, which neither can we put into practice nor can we foresee the practicability of. Therefore, the judging standard that whether the work makes a contribution to the society now is somewhat incomplete.
Interests make the creation and cerebration process more efficient and productive than usual, and most of the products of the process are of good service to society sooner or later. Interests, the positive psychological reaction to certain object or particular activity, can bring people about great concentration, nervous but pleasant mood, both of which are favorable to improve the efficiency and quality of the particular work. Based on the description above, it can be concluded that hard work and research process can be eased by researchers' interests. Then the achievement can be gained more easily. In many cases, these achievements boost the development of society. For instance, being interested in electricity and applied science, Thomas Edison, famous American inventor and scientist, devoted his all life to develop practical devices, including long-lasing practical light bulb, phonograph, and motion picture camera. The interests make the famous inventor work all the time, and the devices he developed are the great contribution to society. What’ more, although many interests now can be believed as unusual or idiosyncratic, they might seem to be common in the future. When Wan Hu, who was a minor Chinese official of the Ming dynasty, attempted to launch himself to the moon with several big fireworks, everybody in that age would consider him as fool. However, the interest that flying in the sky is very common at present. Maybe interests are unusual, whereas they are not ridiculous.
However, the research activity should be conducted by moral and rules in the society because many researchers keep on their research process based on interests but fail to consider the negative aspects of results. In many movies or fictions, many talented scientists are ardent to invent or create some strange but powerful machines or weapons. Therefore, scientists should be educated to be responsible to society and to be regulated by moral and laws so that their interests can become the source of good instead of the spring of evil. When Victor Frankenstein broke the moral and created a so-called man, he brought the destructive monster to society who finally lead his own death. Therefore, responsibility is the prerequisite for research.
Without interests, we can imagine the slow development of society. Without responsibility, we cannot imagine where would our society be lead to.
