《新托福写作超级教程》

环球天下北美考试院专家组编写

Topic 1

It has recently been announced that a large shopping centre may be built in your neighborhood. Do you support or oppose this plan? Why? Use specific reasons and details to support your answer.
Passage 1
For those people who live far from the downtown area, it is essential to build a shopping center close to home. As far as I know, current shopping centers are far from their homes, so a community shopping center would be important.
Firstly, it is reasonable for people to avoid unnecessary things in order to save time. For instance, it takes me over an hour to get to the shopping center. Sometimes it is even worse, especially during public holidays. Shopping originally is an enjoyable thing for most people. However, in this case, on the contrary, there is a lot of trouble in shopping. Just imagine what it would be like if it took such a long time to go shopping. People would readily agree to build a community shopping center.
Secondly, shopping near home not only saves time, but also saves money and energy. It would provide people with much more convenience. Most of the citizens in my city can’t afford a car. So public transportation is the major means by which people go shopping. People always face two options after they go shopping: bus or taxi. If they decide to take a bus, they will have to take all their bags and rush into a packed bus, and if they can’t find a seat, they’ll have to stand for the whole ride. On the other hand, if they decide to take a taxi, it will be expensive. Therefore, the best solution will be shopping at a place close to home.
Admittedly, the construction of a shopping center will make considerable noise, particularly at the beginning, but as a community, each citizen will be able to look forward to the future convenience. After careful consideration, it is not hard to draw the conclusion to welcome building a shopping center close a home.
Passage 2
Since industrialization makes it possible to manufacture large quantities of goods, going shopping has become fairly recreational. Furthermore, transportation keeps everything running smoothly. Shopping centers have entered life of every citizen. When it comes to whether it is good to build a shopping mall near your apartment, different people have different views. As far as I am concerned, the advantages of setting a shopping center near where we live outweigh the disadvantages.
Many people argue that setting a shopping center nearby ushers in more noise, more traffic congestion and more security problems. They would rather go out of their way to shop than allow these bad elements to enter their community.
Building a shopping center near where we live has a lot of potential advantages, such as the following.
First, it provides more conveniences and reduces time wasted in traffic. We can buy whatever we need leisurely on the way home, instead of having to jot the task down on a schedule and driving through the heavy traffic to get there.
Second, it helps improve the economy of the local community as well as that of the whole city. Just imagine, another shopping center means another competitor. If they want to survive in such a demanding market, they must provide higher quality goods and services. As a result, the community and even the city can develop economically.
What is more, it offers job opportunities for both adults and students. For students, they can apply for part-time jobs, gain work experience and earn extra money.
If it were up to me to decide whether or not to build a shopping center near my apartment, I would decide to build it. This is because I am the type of person who enjoys convenience and contact with people. If the shopping center is successfully run, I believe the community will benefit greatly from it.

Topic 2
In the future, students may have the choice of studying at home by using technology such as computers or television or of studying at traditional schools. Which would you prefer? Use reasons and specific details to explain your choice.
Different people have different views on how to study. In my point of view, studying in traditional schools is as significant as, if not more than, studying at home using technology such as computers or television. So it is sensible to study at traditional schools.
The arguments for this view go as follows. First, conventional school education provides you good opportunities to make friends and to develop your social skills. Studying in schools lets you become sufficiently prepared before you enter society. The team spirit that is cultivated at school through student cooperation cannot be achieved through studying at home.
Second, it is much easier to concentrate on studying in classes than it is at home. This is not only because all students study together in class, but also because there are not as many distractions at school as there are at home. In addition, well-established schools supply students with a lot of advanced studying equipment.
Third, teachers in schools may help you solve a problem face to face. After you finish an excellent job, they will boost your confidence. So it highly improves the efficiency of comprehension.
I have been studying in school for twelve years and will continue to study in this way for five years.

Topic 3
Do you consider cooperation or competition to be more important in the world today?
The earth has always been the scenes of fierce competition. We are the most dominant species of the world because our ancestors are the winners of natural selection. This may also explain the famous saying “competition is a part of human nature”.
Consciously or unconsciously, we are always competing with each other. As students, we strive for top grades. As businessmen, we work hard to push our company’s name into the Fortune 500. As parents, we encourage our sons or daughters to work hard and to achieve greatness heart and soul, not only out of love, but partly because we also know that other parents’ sons or daughters are improving. Everyone competes to survive, to develop ourselves and to give our lives meaning.
There is no doubt that competition is of great importance to us all. However, succeeding in such a competitive world is seldom achieved by one’s own individual activities. Our ancestors prospered eventually, for they were clever enough to learn to cooperate. Cooperation strengthens competition. That is why even nowadays, numerous companies, institutions and government departments cooperate to increase their own benefit and reduce risk. Through cooperation, two individuals together can produce more than they could do separately. Yet competition is not a single task of uniting; rather, to achieve the team’s greatest success, individuals have to put aside their own self-interests. For example, a mediocre basketball team could outperform a team with better individual skills, because they know how to cooperate better with each other. Michael Jordan is a marvelous player, but he alone could not have made the Chicago Bulls champions. He often had to pass the ball to his teammates who had better opportunities rather than trying to be an individual hero.
The world never stops competing, and as long as there is competition, there will be cooperation. Competition is a double-edged sword that may enable or even hinder development. Only those who master the art of cooperation can use this sword well. They are the heroes who will develop the earth.

Topic 4
Would you prefer to work in your hometown or in another place like a big city after you finish your studies?
While studying at university, every student faces the problem of deciding what to do and where to go after graduation. Some students choose to remain in their hometowns while some others plan to go to seek opportunities in different towns or cities locally or overseas. It is not to say which choice is wiser. In my opinion, there are advantages and disadvantages with both sides. Whether they are successful or not depends on whether graduates can make the most out of their time, ability and location.
Staying in their hometowns will certainly be much more convenient for recent graduates in terms of their private lives and their jobs. Since their hometown is the place where they have grown up and lived for years, they are very familiar with the local climate, environment and culture as well as its economy, politics and developmental history. It would not take long for a graduate to find a suitable job, adjust and put his heart into it.
More and more graduates nowadays prefer finding a job in a different city rather than returning home to live and work. Young people are full of enthusiasm and eager to seek new challenges. The reason they sacrifice the comfort of their hometown and explore on their own is that they believe in themselves. They want to prove to their parents that they have the ability to overcome obstacles and achieve success. Although sometimes they will feel lonely without family support, they will mature step by step and become more independent and confident.
No matter which choice the students make, they have an equal chance of success. What they should remember is that once they have made the decision, they should stick by that decision and each day try to do better and better.

Topic 5
Some people like to travel with a companion. Other people prefer to travel alone. Which do you prefer? Use specific reasons and examples to support your choice.
Passage 1
I am not a wanderlust, but traveling is by far my most favorite recreation. What an indescribable feeling after you have just hiked a mountain and you are lying on soft grass near a small lake listening to robins singing or when you are standing in front of a dreamy scene which you had only seen on post cards before, and you take the opportunity to absorb the amazing atmosphere around you! At that moment, while you are enjoying the view, the last thing you want to hear is, “Hey! Come on to the next site.” That is why I prefer to travel alone.
Traveling alone, I can change my plans wherever and however I choose. Often I am not interested in the places which attract most travelers. And when all of a sudden I feel like wandering aimlessly through a gloomy alley, I do not need to explain to anyone and bear the complaints.
You may have witnessed the comical scene where a group of tourists, all wearing the same hats, follow a guide who is leading them with a flag. It is hard to tell who is observing and who is being observed. But I am not someone who easily follows the leader. If I really want to get a good idea of a different people, I would like to mingle with the common people, chat with them, eat what they eat and live as they live. You too often just see what they want you to see and not the reality of the culture or environment.
I suppose I could share my experiences and emotions with a traveling partner but who could be more compatible with me than myself. I also recognize that it could be safer, easier traveling with others, but I enjoy the challenge. I enjoy searching for the treasures which are hidden away, forgotten by the masses.
Passage 2
Can you imagine what would happen if you were traveling alone in the desert and lost your way? Do you know what to do if you were out of money or food? And how could you deal with a situation in which you could not communicate with the local people? From these examples you can see how difficult it is for you to travel without anyone else. So, if one day in the future I have the opportunity to travel, I would prefer traveling in a group rather than traveling alone, especially for long journeys.
It is a pleasure to travel with close friends, especially those with whom you share similar interests. During the boredom of long journey, you may kill time easily by talking: you may not feel so homesick on a cold, lonely night. And when meeting something exotic, you can analyze it together by discussing and exchanging different ideas and opinions, thus learning more and gaining more from the experience. So what you gain from the group trip is far greater than if you were traveling alone. How much fun it can be!
Traveling with a group, you can not only get spiritual benefits, but also enjoy material benefits. Though you may be well prepared for a long trip, when facing unexpected circumstances, you may still be deficient in some necessities. It is more convenient to turn to a friend for help rather than to a stranger. And perhaps when you prepare for the trip, your friends may be thoughtful enough to give you some useful suggestions in advance.
Most importantly, the ability to overcome difficulties when traveling in a group is much greater than when traveling alone. No one can deny the fact that five fingers are more efficient than one.
Of course, traveling alone may be an attractive challenge and you can test your own potential by attempting it. But I believe that you get the same or greater benefit from gregarious travel.

Topic 6
Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? There is nothing that young people can teach older people. Use specific reasons and examples to support your position.
There is an old saying, “there must be a teacher in every three persons.” That means, every person has the advantages and you can always learn something from someone. This is not dependant on age, education or social status.
Most of my teachers are older than me. But there is still a lot that I can learn from people who are younger than me. I feel that there are three main reasons why we have a lot to learn from those who are younger than us.
First of all, young people have a greater wealth of modern knowledge. Younger people are always interested in new things and they can accept the ideas more readily. Through speaking with them, you can acquire new information and ways of thinking.
Another more subtle reason is that the young are more adventurous. The young are the fresh blood of society. They do what they want to and are not afraid of being refused. By spending time with them, you can feel their courage and fearlessness.
Some problems require not experience but fresh ideas and perspectives. The young have more ability in this area. In these cases, it is reasonable and necessary for older people to learn from the young.
In conclusion, you can see that young people have much to teach older people. In order to be open-minded and intelligent, you must learn and benefit from younger people.

Topic 7
A company has announced that it wishes to build a large factory near your community. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of this new influence on your community. Do you support or oppose the factory?
I do not agree with the idea of building a big factory near my home.
I live in a quiet place in the downtown area. It is a very big community with thousands of families. Children need a quiet place to grow up, the elderly need a quiet place to rest, and the youth need a quiet place to work.
Factories always discharge environmental waste. They pollute the air we breathe and the water we drink. Now with better living standards, we will not easily allow pollution to take our healthy environment away from us.
Yes, I admit that we need factories to manufacture the goods we consume, and we need factories to provide more jobs, especially since so many people have been laid off from work.
So I suggest we build the factories in a place far from the living community. The factory owners have to take the environment into consideration and try their best to reduce pollution.
Would you agree that this is a good idea? It would be better for the environment and more convenient for workers.

Topic 8
Some people prefer to work for a large company. Others prefer to work for a small company. Which would you prefer?
Some people hold that opinion that working for a large company is superior to working for a small company. Others, however, are opposed to working for a large company. Personally, I would prefer working for a large company because I think it has more advantages.
There are many reasons to work for a large company, and I herein explain a few of the most important ones. The main reason is that it can give us more chances to promote and learn new things. It is easy to see that jobs at big companies such as Microsoft offer more opportunities for promotion than those at other small companies.
Another reason why I advocate working in a large company is that it gives us more confidence in our successes. For example, being employed by an international enterprise would prove our ability and techniques. We would therefore, at such time, believe in ourselves since we were hired by a large and powerful enterprise.
Another strong argument for working in a large company is that we can get more management experience there. This demonstrates the undeniable fact that we learn the ins and outs of management while at work.
Of course, choosing to work for a small company also has advantages to some extent. For example, we could quickly get acquainted with every department because the company is small and has fewer branches.
But if all these factors are contemplated, the advantages of working for a large company far outweigh those of working for a small one. From what has been discussed above, we may finally draw the conclusion that working for a large company can give us more chances to promote our abilities, strengthen our self-confidence and get management experience.

Topic 9
In your opinion, do you think the newspaper or television is the most dominant medium of communication today?
Accustomed though we are to speaking of the newspaper as the dominant news and information medium, it is no longer, in the full sense of the word, dominant. Since it was first introduced into China in the 1980s, TV has increasingly eclipsed the popularity of newspaper. TV began to trick into China in the 1980s, but by the 1990s it flooded in, putting an end to the popularity of the newspaper. The reasons for TV’s popularity are as follows.
It provides convenient accessibility to information. Once you have a TV set, you can simply turn it on whenever you want to get the information you need. If you are tempted to access other news, you need only to change the channel. For those, like the elderly, who find it inconvenient to go out to get a newspaper everyday, the TV is a real boom.
Although convenience is the most important determinant, it is not the only reason for the boom. The efficiency and immediacy of TV helps explain this rise. TV can show the latest and even live events.
TV’s popularity is undoubtedly a result of this high efficiency, but it is also derived from its vivid imagery. In the newspaper era, there were only soundless words and occasional pictures, but those who were unable to read newspaper, particularly young children and illiterate adults, could receive information through TV.
Another advantage is that the TV is more economical because of its durability. A TV set can last for more than ten years and provide sufficient information to make purchasing two newspapers a day unnecessary.
The main advantages of the TV are its convenience, efficiency, vividness and economy. Therefore, in modern society, the TV has become the most dominant medium.

Topic 10
Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Parents are the best teachers.
One of the questions discussed keenly across the world is who are the best teachers for children. Is it schoolteachers, friends or parents? More and more, people consider that parents play a far more pivotal role in their children’s lives, beyond giving life to them and raising them. Yet there are some people who cast serious doubts on this and are prepared to argue against it. But I would have to say, if someone were to ask me this question, I would follow the contemporary opinion and support the profound importance of parents’ guidance.
Here I would like to explain a few of the most pertinent ones as follows.
Firstly, parents can substitute for schoolteachers in the traditional, basic sense. Parents can more personally relate their life experience, and never is this truer than when children meet something they feel too embarrassed to discuss openly with others. Parents are their children’s biggest fan and the persons they can mostly turn to.
Furthermore, parents, to some extent, are more familiar with their children, because the time the children spend with them is longer than with others. With that familiarity, parents can teach their children more effectively and efficiently.
In conclusion, if all factors are considered, it is apparent that the advantages of parents taking the role of teacher outweigh the disadvantages.

Topic 11
Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? It is better to be a member of a group than to be the leader of a group.
“He who does not want to be a general is not a good soldier” is a quote from my favorite historical figure, Napoleon. Just as this quote expresses, I would rather lead a group than be a group member.
First, in my opinion, you can lead a group according to your own ideas if you are the leader. On the contrary, if you are only a member of the group, you can not advance your own ideas and are subject to the ideas of the group leader.
Second, if you lead a group, you will be in contact with many kinds of people and people with many different ideas. This will help you develop your abilities. For example, in a part-time job I had when I was a senior in high school, I introduced motorcycle models to potential customers. Initially, when I was just a member of the sales team, I merely learned how to sell the models. But later, I became team leader through diligence in my work. I learned a great deal which I had not noticed before. After that, I found my job more interesting.
Perhaps more than anything else, I think being a group leader is preferable to being a group member because it allows me to make great progress in developing my abilities.
As an aside, I would like to add that although I find being a leader attractive, I would rather play football or basketball like a player than coach in sports. Being active in sports is something which brings me a great deal of enjoyment.

Topic 12
It has been said “not everything that is learned is contained in books.” Compare and contrast knowledge gained from experience with knowledge gained from books.
People can gain knowledge both from file experience and from reading books. An old adage holds that not all useful knowledge can be found in books. The resources gained from experience make a greater impression and are more reliable.
Firstly, knowledge gained from experience leaves a deeper impression on a person than does knowledge gained from book. Thus it must make a deeper impression for people to learn through experience. For example, I find it is usually hard to remember something in a textbook, but if the teacher transforms the tedious words into a live experiment to let me take part in it myself, it will be much easier for me to grasp the point.
An old Chinese saying goes, “to hear something is false, to see something is true.” The information learned from books is based on other people’s experiences, so if you want to verify it, you had better test it with your own experience.
In short, it is possible to learn both from books and experience, but knowledge gained from experience is much more important. So I advocate that people look to gain their knowledge from their own experience.

Topic 13
Do you agree or disagree with the following statement: teachers should make learning enjoyable and funny for their students.
As a student, I agree with the opinion that teachers should make learning enjoyable and funny for their students. There are two reasons for this.
First, if teachers make learning more enjoyable and funny, students will be able to learn in a more pleasant environment. Studying is a difficult process. If a teacher speaks in a monotone, without any expression, students will not be interested, no matter how interesting the topic is. In this aspect, the teachers at the New Oriental School are quite good. They often use jokes as a part of their lectures or express themselves through their body language. This is much easier for students to understand.
Second, when a teacher makes learning enjoyable and funny, it is good for the teacher as well. If the teacher is responsible for more than one group of students, that teacher must repeat the content of his or her lecture several times. Teachers, as well as students, need variety. An enjoyable and amusing class could lead to more interest in teaching.
As far as I see, making learning enjoyable and funny, whether for the students or for the teacher, is a good thing. My several years of experience as a student tells me this is true.

Topic 14
The computer is widely used in education and some people think teachers do not play important role in the classroom. Do you agree or disagree?
As the pace of digital technology speeds up, computers are now widely applied in education and have won tremendous popularity. However, there is no yet absolute agreement on the question whether teachers are of no use with this trend. As I see it, although computers employed in education enjoy an array of benefits such as high speed, easy accessibility and great efficiency, teachers are still of significance.
On a substantial level, computers have reshaped the teaching as well as studying way. For teachers, computers make the teaching method more colorful, vivid and interesting. For students, computers help them finish their homework efficiently, obtain up-to-date information, expand their horizon and stimulate their interest in science.
In spite of this, that teachers’ role will be replaced is a plausible hypothesis rather than reality. It is always the case that teachers can play an indispensable and imperative part that computers cannot do. Teachers not only teach us knowledge, but render us many other things such as the positive attitude to life, moral instructions, courage to overcome difficulties, a host of practical skills, to name just a few. As for students, they are often more crucial than knowledge itself. It is hard to imagine that without teachers, computers can perform as well as teachers do.
Another point to note is that students are immature and are easily affected by adverse influence by computers. Nowadays, it is not rare to see that many students are addicted to computer games and live in a virtual world per day. Because of this, they cannot concentrate on their study. What is even worse is that many youngsters are indulged in the Internet where violence, pornography and bloody contents are pervasive. Due to their inexperience and gullibility, they may go astray after watching too many these programs. From this angle, the existence of teachers is a must for the simple reason that they can supervise and educate students.
Above all, I am still inclined to support the opinion that computers can never replace teachers. After all, the computer is only a vital assistant in teaching and it is teachers who make difference in education.

Topic 15
Generation gap is a common problem we should face in the society. What are its causes and what measures should be taken to solve it?
At present, never has the issue concerning generation gap failed to attract our eyes. Many educators and parents present their opinions from different angles. As I see it, there are the three following factors contributing to this risk and also, three solutions can be outlined respectively.
As for its causes, I think that three reasons are worth mentioning. To begin with, people receive different education and form different outlooks of the world. The education children receive today is different from that of their parents, thus causing that parents want their children to follow the traditional values they regard necessary and children are often inclined to discard the traditional values as a rebellion. So, conflict between parents and children seems unavoidable. In addition, lack of communication also accounts for the fact. Many parents fail to realize the importance of communication and in their minds, children should obey them and it is natural. However, in children’s minds, their parents do not value the modern development, advanced technology, their real thoughts, to name just a few. Both parents and children do believe that they themselves are right. In this way, they do not want to communicate with each other. Finally, it is due to the big influence of media which usually exaggerates the importance of individuality that many children regard rebellion against their parents as cool and fantastic. Hence, misunderstanding and prejudice will be produced.
To solve this problem, I do believe the following measures should be taken. First, parents ought to communicate positively with their children and give them more person-to-person services. What’s more, a looser educational environment should be created in every family and free speech should be advocated. Last, a range of knowledge should be given to children and they should be encouraged to understand their parents and think in their parents’ positions.
In conclusion, only when these practical measures are taken will this problem be dealt with step by step and be gone with the wind.

Topic 16
Advertising is having a bigger influence on our daily lives. Some people believe the positive effects of advertising outweigh the negative effects. What’s your opinion?
Living in this information-explosion society, we can never avoid being influenced by advertisements. Whenever we turn on the TV, look through a newspaper or even walk along the street, advertisements will jump into our sight and be impressive. It seems certain that we can never do or live without them. If asked whether their advantages far outweigh their disadvantages, I would say “by all means”.
To begin with, advertisements do add spice to our daily lives. For one thing, with advertisements, we are now blessed with a great deal of the latest information, thus making it possible for us to compare and contrast the qualities of different products supplied in the market and to purchase the best ones at reasonable prices. For another, many advertisements are full of highly artistic values, such as witty slogans and wonderful pictures. By watching them, not only can we get relaxed and entertained, but we can get educated. Therefore, our lives will be made more colorful, convenient and comfortable.
What is more, advertisements contribute to the economic development. To be sure, advertisements can create a fairer environment for commercial communication and help the producers to grasp the opportunity to compete for the lion’s share of the market. Also, advertisements are a vital source of governmental revenue. It is due to various kinds of advertisements that the government can lay a solid foundation for its economic development.
Finally, advertisements are positive to the cultural diversity. As we all know, advertisements can mirror cultures. By watching various colorful advertisements, Chinese people have got a golden opportunity to have a deeper understanding of western cultures. Some breath-taking advertising slogans such as “ask for more”, “good to the last drop”, “intelligence everywhere”, “no business too small, no problem too big” and “the taste is great” are all familiar to Chinese people. Also, the cultural values presented in these advertisements are shared, praised and appreciated by an increasing number of people in China. Thus, misunderstanding and prejudice can be removed and the cultural diversity can be realized.
Although it cannot be denied that advertisements are never without their demerits such as cheating information, exaggeration of products’ functions and so on, their merits obviously far outweigh their demerits. Their demerits can be removed step by step when some feasible measures are adopted. Thus, it is no overstatement to say that a life without advertisements is inconceivable to a modern person.

Topic 17
Successful sports professionals can earn a great deal of more money than people in other important professions. Some people think it is just justified while others think it is unfair. What’s your opinion?
Whether successful sports professionals, who are now regarded as celebrities in many countries, should be paid more money than people who do other vital professions is now discussed by an increasing number of people. Some people may assert it is not fair, while others argue that it is natural. Personally, I take the side with the latter view.
Those who think it is unfair may feel that high salaries should be given to people who take other significant jobs such as doctors, lawyers, teachers and scientists. As far as they are concerned, these people contribute considerably to the society, thus deserving being paid fat salaries. Another point they put it that many sports encourage people to experience violence. Thus, people who are good at these activities should not be paid that much money for they set a bad example to others.
However, I hold the view that sports professionals should get a good pay. To begin with, salaries are, to a considerable degree, determined by the contribution people make to society. Sports stars, like other important people, benefit the society in their own ways. Not only do they popularize sports among people, but they present the notion of power, courage and wisdom. Thus, sports stars’ earning high salaries seems justified. What is more, many sports professionals’ career life is short. Some of them are forced to retire when they are young. Earning high salaries ensures that they can live a good life when they retire. This is just the reward of their hard training, excellent performance and wonderful spirit during their career period. Last of all, sports stars often suffer from dangers and pressure from the media and the public. Some games such as football, basketball, and boxing are dangerous. People who perform these sports activities are confronted with the danger of being injured per day. Also, as sports stars, they are forever living under the spotlight, having little privacy. High salaries, in a sense, are compensations for this life.
To sum up, I do strongly believe that sports stars should earn high salaries, but at the same time, this trend also indicates that other professions are not as popular as sports.

Topic 18
Computers are now widely used in modern society. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of computers.
It goes without saying that computers have revolutionized the way people think and act. However, there is no absolute agreement on the question whether they are a blessing or a curse. As far as I am concerned, computers, it seems certain, combine angel and devil perfectly.
On the one hand, computers enjoy a number of advantages. To begin with, computers do make our lives more colorful, convenient and comfortable. With computers, people are now relieved from hard manual work they had to take before, thus making it possible for people to have more time to enjoy life. With computers, people are now exposed to the latest information they want to obtain. With computers, people never have to think up other entertaining activities for computer games never fail to fascinate people. In addition, computers are positive to education. With computers being widely used in education, education is now witnessing earth-shaking changes. Not only do computers enrich teaching methods, but they make teaching and learning more vivid and interactive. For example, teachers’ using PPT makes their class organized better and at the same time with the help of the Internet, students can finish their homework more efficiently and expand their horizon of knowledge. Last of all, business can benefit from the wide application of computers. Nowadays, it is not rare to see that on-line business is popular among people, especially among youngsters. It is with on-line business that people are blessed with a good opportunity to purchase whatever they like without going out. Suppose this trend booms, business will develop by leaps and bounds.
However, on the other hand, they also give rise to many problems. In the first place, computers may jeopardize people’s physical and psychological health. Staying in front of the computer for a long time is detrimental to people’s health. Losing hair, headache, poor quality of sleep and near-sightedness are all price people pay for computers. To make things worse, staying in front of the computer too long, people may suffer from some psychological illnesses. Clear is that people spending too much time on computers may become unimaginative, isolated, inactive, eccentric and lonely. What’s more, computers exert baneful impacts on people’s character. People who use computers too much may be over-dependent on computers. So “convenient” are computers that many people are crazy about doing almost everything by turning on their computers, clicking the mouse, and then, everything is OK. Little by little, people may become lazy and unwilling to exercise their brain. Last, with the Internet, many new types of crime are now being brought to people’s attention. Cyber crime and youth crime are good cases in point. A great deal of cheating and misleading information in the Internet, to a great extent, encourages cyber crime and consumers’ gullibility, and inexperience may make matters worse. Also, the Internet is never without violence, sexual alluring and bloody contents. Watching them, people, especially young people, may imitate what they saw. This maybe accounts for why the youth crime is rising per year.
Taking all factors into consideration, I should admit that I cannot make a yes-no answer to this perplexing question of whether computers are a blessing or a curse. It mainly depends on how we look at this issue. Maybe, we should further discuss this question in the future so that a more reasonable conclusion could be drawn.

Topic 19
Some people prefer to spend their lives doing the same things and avoiding change. Others, however, think that change is always a good thing. What’s your own opinion?
It is no exaggeration to say that change is to people what water is to fish. Some may spend their lives doing the same things and maintain the stability they enjoy. However, if I were asked whether change is always a good thing, I would say “by all means”.
Why some people avoid change is beyond me. They may assert that living in a familiar environment, they feel satisfied, stable and happy. In such an environment, they never have to devise other ways to fulfill themselves. What they should do is to live comfortably, work efficiently and play happily. To be true, this seems to be fascinating and eye-catching. Nevertheless, can’t we draw a telling conclusion that it is this life that thoroughly destroys people’s ambition and barricades people’s steps?
As for me, change is more breath-taking than stability. The individual change should be first factor to be outlined. Making the individual change means that people are blessed with a golden opportunity to develop the potential, expand the horizon of knowledge and cultivate the logical thinking. Suppose one is forever doing the same job and avoiding change, one will never know what else he / she can do, thus making it impossible for him / her to develop his / her potential. Besides, change gives one an opportunity to try whatever he / she is fond of. Change may mean comparative instability, yet it is this that forces people to make wiser judgment and acquire more knowledge to adapt themselves to this ever-accelerated society. In this way, people’s view is expanded and their logical thinking can be cultivated.
What’s more, the social change is more desirable and appealing. The change of technology has made it possible for people to live a more comfortable, convenient and colorful life and to solve the problems people once regarded as fatal. The change of economy has laid a solid foundation for the world development. The change of culture has brought about the cultural diversity. The dream that differences should be respected and misunderstanding should be eliminated is no longer a “Mission Impossible”. The change of education has contributed to the educational equality and optimized the educational resources. More and more people who cannot pay for the high tuition now have the same chance to receive education.
As has been mentioned previously, we can see clearly that though taken by some people as unacceptable, change is in reality an unavoidable trend.
