Advertising is having a bigger influence on our daily lives. Some people believe the positive effects of advertising outweigh the negative effects. What’s your opinion?
Living in this information-explosion society, we can never avoid being influenced by advertisements. Whenever we turn on the TV, look through a newspaper or even walk along the street, advertisements will jump into our sight and be impressive. It seems certain that we can never do or live without them. If asked whether their advantages far outweigh their disadvantages, I would say “by all means”.
To begin with, advertisements do add spice to our daily lives. For one thing, with advertisements, we are now blessed with a great deal of the latest information, thus making it possible for us to compare and contrast the qualities of different products supplied in the market and to purchase the best ones at reasonable prices. For another, many advertisements are full of highly artistic values, such as witty slogans and wonderful pictures. By watching them, not only can we get relaxed and entertained, but we can get educated. Therefore, our lives will be made more colorful, convenient and comfortable.
What is more, advertisements contribute to the economic development. To be sure, advertisements can create a fairer environment for commercial communication and help the producers to grasp the opportunity to compete for the lion’s share of the market. Also, advertisements are a vital source of governmental revenue. It is due to various kinds of advertisements that the government can lay a solid foundation for its economic development.
Finally, advertisements are positive to the cultural diversity. As we all know, advertisements can mirror cultures. By watching various colorful advertisements, Chinese people have got a golden opportunity to have a deeper understanding of western cultures. Some breath-taking advertising slogans such as “ask for more”, “good to the last drop”, “intelligence everywhere”, “no business too small, no problem too big” and “the taste is great” are all familiar to Chinese people. Also, the cultural values presented in these advertisements are shared, praised and appreciated by an increasing number of people in China. Thus, misunderstanding and prejudice can be removed and the cultural diversity can be realized.
Although it cannot be denied that advertisements are never without their demerits such as cheating information, exaggeration of products’ functions and so on, their merits obviously far outweigh their demerits. Their demerits can be removed step by step when some feasible measures are adopted. Thus, it is no overstatement to say that a life without advertisements is inconceivable to a modern person.

Successful sports professionals can earn a great deal of more money than people in other important professions. Some people think it is just justified while others think it is unfair. What’s your opinion?
Whether successful sports professionals, who are now regarded as celebrities in many countries, should be paid more money than people who do other vital professions is now discussed by an increasing number of people. Some people may assert it is not fair, while others argue that it is natural. Personally, I take the side with the latter view.
Those who think it is unfair may feel that high salaries should be given to people who take other significant jobs such as doctors, lawyers, teachers and scientists. As far as they are concerned, these people contribute considerably to the society, thus deserving being paid fat salaries. Another point they put it that many sports encourage people to experience violence. Thus, people who are good at these activities should not be paid that much money for they set a bad example to others.
However, I hold the view that sports professionals should get a good pay. To begin with, salaries are, to a considerable degree, determined by the contribution people make to society. Sports stars, like other important people, benefit the society in their own ways. Not only do they popularize sports among people, but they present the notion of power, courage and wisdom. Thus, sports stars’ earning high salaries seems justified. What is more, many sports professionals’ career life is short. Some of them are forced to retire when they are young. Earning high salaries ensures that they can live a good life when they retire. This is just the reward of their hard training, excellent performance and wonderful spirit during their career period. Last of all, sports stars often suffer from dangers and pressure from the media and the public. Some games such as football, basketball, and boxing are dangerous. People who perform these sports activities are confronted with the danger of being injured per day. Also, as sports stars, they are forever living under the spotlight, having little privacy. High salaries, in a sense, are compensations for this life.
To sum up, I do strongly believe that sports stars should earn high salaries, but at the same time, this trend also indicates that other professions are not as popular as sports.

Computers are now widely used in modern society. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of computers.
It goes without saying that computers have revolutionized the way people think and act. However, there is no absolute agreement on the question whether they are a blessing or a curse. As far as I am concerned, computers, it seems certain, combine angel and devil perfectly.
On the one hand, computers enjoy a number of advantages. To begin with, computers do make our lives more colorful, convenient and comfortable. With computers, people are now relieved from hard manual work they had to take before, thus making it possible for people to have more time to enjoy life. With computers, people are now exposed to the latest information they want to obtain. With computers, people never have to think up other entertaining activities for computer games never fail to fascinate people. In addition, computers are positive to education. With computers being widely used in education, education is now witnessing earth-shaking changes. Not only do computers enrich teaching methods, but they make teaching and learning more vivid and interactive. For example, teachers’ using PPT makes their class organized better and at the same time with the help of the Internet, students can finish their homework more efficiently and expand their horizon of knowledge. Last of all, business can benefit from the wide application of computers. Nowadays, it is not rare to see that on-line business is popular among people, especially among youngsters. It is with on-line business that people are blessed with a good opportunity to purchase whatever they like without going out. Suppose this trend booms, business will develop by leaps and bounds.
However, on the other hand, they also give rise to many problems. In the first place, computers may jeopardize people’s physical and psychological health. Staying in front of the computer for a long time is detrimental to people’s health. Losing hair, headache, poor quality of sleep and near-sightedness are all price people pay for computers. To make things worse, staying in front of the computer too long, people may suffer from some psychological illnesses. Clear is that people spending too much time on computers may become unimaginative, isolated, inactive, eccentric and lonely. What’s more, computers exert baneful impacts on people’s character. People who use computers too much may be over-dependent on computers. So “convenient” are computers that many people are crazy about doing almost everything by turning on their computers, clicking the mouse, and then, everything is OK. Little by little, people may become lazy and unwilling to exercise their brain. Last, with the Internet, many new types of crime are now being brought to people’s attention. Cyber crime and youth crime are good cases in point. A great deal of cheating and misleading information in the Internet, to a great extent, encourages cyber crime and consumers’ gullibility, and inexperience may make matters worse. Also, the Internet is never without violence, sexual alluring and bloody contents. Watching them, people, especially young people, may imitate what they saw. This maybe accounts for why the youth crime is rising per year.
Taking all factors into consideration, I should admit that I cannot make a yes-no answer to this perplexing question of whether computers are a blessing or a curse. It mainly depends on how we look at this issue. Maybe, we should further discuss this question in the future so that a more reasonable conclusion could be drawn. |
