131"The arts (painting, music, literature, etc.) reveal the otherwise hidden ideas and impulses of a society."
What is the role of the arts? This debating has caused wide public concern in a large amount of cities across the world.
In my point of view, the arts not only represent people's emotion, but also reveal the otherwise hidden ideas and impulses of a society.
It is universally acknowledged that arts such as painting, music and dancing are used to express people's feelings to life. When it was developed in the primitive society, people painted on the wall of the caves. They used stones and branches to painting in order to record their lives. When they hunted a large amount of animals, they singing and dancing to celebrate the success. At that time arts are just a tool which is used to record and express people’s daily life. With the development of the society, an increasing number of emotions are added into the arts. People tend to use arts to represent their feeling including happiness, sadness, disappointment and hope so that we can feel a refection of the artists’ personal visions of an aesthetic ideal. For example, people may create a sorrowful tune to express sad or regret.
Since then, arts have become a significant part of human's life.
When it comes to arts, we cannot ignore a special form of arts-- literature. Literature focuses on telling people the author's experience and understanding of life as well as revealing a society's hidden ideas and impulses. As a branch of aesthetics, comparing with other forms of arts, literature is more concrete. It can lead people to image different people and their life styles. What's more, it can display the author's inner world and we can understand the author's feeling about the contemporary society through reading his book. There is a good example can explain what I mean. A famous American writer, whose name is Mark Twain. According to his experience in his childhood, he wrote a book called Tom Sawyer. In this book he reveals the hypocritical religion and social customs. Therefore, people can understand the society more clearly than before after reading Tom Sawyer.
However, a large number of great arts are famous from their meanings. Most of them show the terrible or perfect parts of the society. These arts not only reflect the complex psychological profile of the artists, but also record the rise and decline of the society. After watching them, people can understand the course of the history.
At the same time they can help people to understand the otherwise hidden ideas and impulses of a society and promote the society's development. To illustrate, Raphael is one of the representative of the Renaissance. The reason why Raphael’s painting have become famous is that he used his painting to show the new ideals of humanism, democracy and republic. In addition, in his paintings we can easily feel his determination to challenge the authority of papal. Thus, we not only can praise his painting styles, but also can speak highly of his determination.
From what has been discussed above, we may reasonable to believe that the speaker's statement is substantially correct. The arts can mirror the otherwise hidden ideas and impulses of a society. Besides, we cannot ignore the arts also can express the artists’ own feelings. The arts are special forms to reflect the artists’ inner world and their opinions of the society. |
