Editing is disrespectful, but classics will survive

The current controversy over an Alabama publisher's decision to drop the N-word from a new
edition of Mark Twain's "Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" reminds us of the ruckus that
erupted back in 2007 when Florida school officials agreed to drop the N-word from Fort
Walton Beach High School's stage production of "Too Kill a Mockingbird."
In both instances, someone decided a work of literature should be sanitized to suit modern

audiences. But while we opposed school officials' decision to censor "Mockingbird," weare
not greatly bothered by "Huck Finn's" editing.
Here's some of what the Northwest Florida Daily News wrote about the "Mockingbird" dust-up

in 2007: "Deleting the word amounts to censorship. Even more disappointing, it signals that
school officials believe the uglier aspects of history-and of literature based on that
history-should be whitewashed to satisfy the political sensibilities of today."
Those same objections apply to the "Huck Finn" revision. Up to a point.Alan Gribben, an

English professor at Auburn University Montgomery, hopes that replacing the N-werd with
"slave" in a combined edition of "HUCK Finn" and "Tom Sawyer" will make the novels more
palatable to teachers and students. We think he misses the point of the language-it captures
the casual racism of the time, and undergirds a message of tolerance-and disrespects an
American classic.
But Twain's novels are out of copyright, which means anyone can publish them in whatever

form they choose, condensed or "corrected" or cleaned up. They've done exactly that for
decades.
This is not censorship-unlike school officials' attempt to fiddle with "To Kill a

Mockingbird," which was censorship, because it involved a government entity forcing a change
in language.(The officials eventually backed down.)
Nor will the sanitized "Huck Finn" limit reader's choises. Professor Gribben's version

will be just one of many on the market. We visited a local Book-A-Million store last week
and found 11 different editions of "Huck Finn" from nine different publishers. All contained
the N-word.
No, we don't care much for the Gribbenization of "Huck Finn." But Mark Twain's works will

survive this and other wrongheaded rewrites.

204. Censorship is rarely, if ever, justified.

77. It is unfortunate but true that political decisions and activities affect all aspects of people’s lives.
100. So much is new and complex today that looking back for an understanding the past provides little guidance for living in the present.

From Apocalypse

Education is one of the key words of our time. A man without an education, many of us believe, is an unfortunate victim of adverse circumstances, deprived of one of the greatest twentieth-century opportunities. Convinced of the importance of education, modern states 'invest' in institutions of learning to get back 'interest' in the form of a large group of enlightened young men and women who are potential leaders. Education, whith its cycles of instruction so carefully worked out, punctuated by textbook-those purchasable wells of wisdom-what would civilization be like without its benefits?
So much is certain: that we would have doctors and preachers, lawyers and defendants, marriages and births-but our spiritual outlook would be different. We would lay less stress on 'facts and figures' and more on a good memory, on applied psychology, and on the capacity  of a man to get along with his fellow-citizens. If our educational system were fashioned after its bookless past we would have the most democratic form of 'college' imaginable. Aming tribal people all knowledge inherited by tradition is shared by all; it is taught to every member of every member of the tribe so that in this respect everybodyis equally equipped for life.
It is the ideal condition of the 'equal start' which only our most progressive forms of modern education try to regain. In primitive cultures the obligation to seek and to receive the tradition instruction is binding to all. There are no 'illiterates'-if the term can be applied to people without a script-while our own compulsory school attendance becomelaw in Germany in 1642, in France in 1806, and in England in 1876, and is still non-existent in a number of 'civilized' nations. This shows how long it was before we deemed it necessary to make sure that all our children could share in the knowledge accumulated by the 'happy few' during the past centuries.
Education in the wilderness is not a matter of monetary means. All are entitled to an equal start. There is none of the hurry which, in our society, often hampers the full development of a growing personality. There, a child grows up under the ever-present attention of his parent; therefore the jungles and the savannahs know of no 'juvenile delinquency'. No necessity of making a living away from home result in neglect of children, and no father is cinfronted with his inability to 'buy' an education for his children.

Word:

82. For better or worse, education is a process that involves revising the ideas, beliefs, and values people held in the past.
181. The purpose of education should be to provide students with a value system, a standard, a set of ideas—not to prepare them for a specific job.

[b] Today is the start of Public Notice Week in Tennessee. Over the next few days, we

and other newspapers in this state want to call attention to one of the most sacred

roles we fill-keeping you informed of vital government meetings, land transactions

and other legal proceedings that by state law require pblic notices.
We believe this week is crucial for educating not only our readers, but state

lawmakers on the importance of public notices. There are some legislators who want

to remove public notices from newspapers and allow governments to place them on

hard-to-find goverment websites under the exuse of saving money. This would do

great injury to the citizens of Tennessee who have traditionally looked to their

local newspapers to keep them informed of these public notices.
Before state law required these notices to be printed in local newspapers of

record, they were hammered on signboards near the courthouse. These notices could

sometomes be hard to find and even harder to read.
Proponents of removing public notices from newspapers will argue that we have a

vested financial interest in the matter. It's true-removing public notices would

represent a great loss of revenue for some newspapers. But this issue is not about

profit or even precedent. It's about the average citizen of this state having easy

and reliable access to public notices. There are many Tennessees who are not

outline and have no desire to be. How would they have access to these notices if

they are only oublished on a website?
Publication of these public notices in local newspapers represent an accessible

permenant record that cannot be forged or altered by a computer hacker. Newspapers

hace been a trusted source for these public notices for decades and there is no

reason we shouldn't continue in that role for years to come.

word:

232. It is often necessary, even desirable, for political leaders to withhold information from the public.
127. Tradition and modernization are incompatible. One must choose between them.

Beauty
A young man sees a sunsetand , unable to understant or to express the emotiom

that it rouses in him, concludes that it must be the gateway to a world that lies

beyond. It is difficult for any of us in moments of intense aesthetic exprience to

resist the suggestion that we are catching a glimpse of a light that shines down to

us from a different realm of existence, different and, because the experience is

intensely moving, in some way higher. And, thought the gleams blind and dazzle, yet

do they convey a hint of beauty and serenity greater than we have knowen or

imagined. Greater too than we can describe; for language, which was invented to

convey the meanings of this world, cannot readily be fitted to the uses of another.
That all great art has this power of suggesting a world beyond is undeniable. In

some moods, Nature shares it. There is no sky in June so blue that it does not

point forward to a bluer, no sunset so beautiful that it does not waken the vision

of a greater beauty, a vision which passes before it os fully glimpsed, and in

passing leaves an indefinable linging and regret. But, if this world is not merely

a bad joke, life a vulgar flare amid the cool radiance of the stars, and existence

an empty laugh braying across the mysteries; if these intimations of a something

behind and beyond are not evil humour born of indigestion, or whimsies sent by the

divil to mock and madden us, if, in a word, beauty means something, yet we must not

seek to interpret the meaning. If we glimpse the unutterable, it is unwise to try

to utter it, nor should we seek to invest with significance that which we cannot

grasp. Beauty in terms of our human meanings is meaningless.

word:

111. The arts(painting, music, literature, etc.) reveal the otherwise hidden ideas and impulses of a society.
198. In order for any work of art—whether film, literature, sculpture, or a song—to have merit, it must be understandable to most people.

The same Breathnach whose 1995 self-help book, Simple Abundance, was featured on Oprah Winfrey's show 11 times and has sold 7 million copies.
The author had fled England, leaving behind her cherished 900-year-old home-once Sir Isaac Newton's chapel-aling with her sheep, her freeloading British husband and creditors baying for payment.
Breathnach's inspiring new book, Peace and Plenty, recaptures the gentle voice of gratitude and gumption that made Simple Abundance a sensation. It's the voice that became muted in her subsequent books,  the ones that were written back when the new millionairess was buying the Duke of Windsor's dectionaries at Sotheby auctions and taking the Concorde as if it were a teain.
Her new book will comfort shopaholics who are terrified to check their credit card balances and any woman who fears ending up a bag lady.
Although Peace is not a 365-day guide like Abundance, Breathnach once again weaves together various elements. She includes quotes and anecdotes from a vast range of sources, including female writers such as Dorothy Parker, who earned and lost a fortune because of bad choices in love.
Bit by bit, Breathnach unspools her personal tale of woe.A romantic, she married for love. But her second husband, the father of six by three wives, married for money-hers. Breathnach admits she started down the road to fiscal perdition before their marriage. Like many pro athletes and movie stars, she spent as if the millions would never stop.
And yet Peace and Plenty is also a story of hope and resilience. From the start, generosity has always been a theme in Breathnach's writing and actions. To date, her simple Abundance foundation has given away more than $1 million.
The problem wasn't money. It was her emotional baggage about love and pleasing others that Breathnach attached to money, dating back to childhood.
The worst was the shame. Here she was , a best-selling self-help expert, swamped by bills she couldn't bring herself to open, much less pay, whose creditors were threatening to call Oprah and expose her. Eventually, Breathnach followed Pollyanna's advice-"be glad, be good, be good, be brave"-and put her financial house in order.
By the end, former chatelaine of Sir Isaac Newton's chapel who once had nine assistants and three lavish homes on two continents is able to move out of her sister's apartment into a tiny rental of her own.
No longer prosperous but, finally, at peace financially.

93. It is primarily through our identification with social groups that we define ourselves.
56. Truly profound thinkers and highly creative artists are always out of step with their time and their society.
44. Many people know how to attain success, but few know how to make the best use of it.
