The significance of technology emerges gradually with the wheels of human history ahead. But to what extent did technology influence us? The assertion of social custom and ethics are determined by technology, as I believe, is somehow a one-sided view. Actually, technology can partially influence our social custom and ethics but could not determine them.

The improvement of our social custom and ethics which are altered by technology is obvious. New technology rooted from the updated knowledge and such various kind of knowledge is based on the refresh acknowledgement of our nature and our lives. Many sorts of phenomena which couldn’t be fully expressed by people at old times can be solved in a scientific way subsequently. As a result, the old actions like rituals and religions which developed by people for the sake of their unknown world disappeared. Ancient Chinese society was mainly rely on agriculture, thus, the climate change has a significant meaning to the farmers among old China. Thousands of years they gave their best wishes to the God, hoping a fine climate and peaceful lives through the rituals at the important date. However, with the improvement of technology, through metrology we realized that the weather changed because of complex nature reasons. What’s more, we can even control the climate via many modern technologies. Consequently, no ritual for rain and Sunlight is left right now.

Ethics also enhanced due to technology. As what I have said above, the improvement of technology is based on the refresh acknowledgement of our nature and our lives. The more we learned, the deeper we know for ourselves. 1953, the discovery of the structure of DNA, opened a new world for human beings in their own lives. The research finding made it possible to change and enhance life artificially. Traditional ideas about “only living is fantastic” crashed due to a more rational and comprehensive thinking about the meaning of life. People no longer seek for the everlasting body but trend to let nature takes its course. Euthanasia, for instance, is a new way to terminate our lives at edge.

Enough details for partially influence. No matter how technology has changed our social custom and ethics, it still didn’t have the ability to determine. All that is true, the good and the beautiful are on the same wavelength; be they suffered thousands of years’ flux from and be they measured with the values of East or of West. Human endeavor achieved a great success but we haven’t forgotten what we are. On the one hand, technology improvement results in new sort of criminal, on the other hand, we developed new ways for anti-criminal. Computer technology and the internet various our lives but we cannot forget the computer virus which had caused huge devastation. Fortunately, we made progress and developed the anti-virus software. Nuclear energy was original developed for destroy. Right now, most countries, especially the united state and Russia which hold the 90% of nuclear bomb made effort to reduce the numbers of these horrible weapons. Clone technology is limited in many ways according to law because people are worried about the irrevocable mistakes for genes. All in all, most people around the world whenever they born wherever they live have the faith for goodness. It is the custom and ethics which never changed forever.

To put all the nuts in a shell, even technology accompanied with the updated knowledge changed several kinds of social custom and ethics. We only could regard it as the deserved change which embodies progress. Talking about the root of our spirit lasting thousands of years like goodness, faithful and so forth, they never affected by technology.

With the development of technology and science, people's life has been changed to large extent. It's no doubt that technologies have influenced social customs and ethics, but in no way can they be competent to determine the social customs and ethics.

To begin with, technologies do produce an effect on social customs. Let's take a look at our present life, what we use or enjoy are all based on the advancing technology. In the past, we used to send a letter to our relatives and friends far away from us. But now with the development of internet and communication, it's easy to get along with anyone you want through emails and mobile phones which make distance no longer an obstacle. What's more, the advancing technologies have helped human beings explain many strange nature happenings that have troubled people for long so that people almost have given up worship of totem which is said to be a traditional custom in the past. Besides, thanks to their being highly reliable and stable in prediction, technologies have largely influenced social customs related to rituals practiced to pray for good harvests and mild weather. Farmers and fishermen no longer need to rely on sacrifice, god worshipping, or augury before making decisions to sow and reap or sail and fish. For them, the traditional customs have become obsolete and superseded by scientific technologies. From all these changes shown above, it’s clear to see the effects of technologies in the transform of social customs.

Similarly, technologies also play an important role in forming more rational social ethics. The study on genetics, which is becoming a matter of concern for more and more people, makes people acknowledge the harm of marriages in proximity of blood. This kind of marriage, considered to cement old ties by marriage as marriage between cousins in former social ethics, is now proved by technical research of geneticist a mistake which may lead to high incidence of genetic diseases on their children. Imagine that with such a disabled child, how can a family be happy and how will the social be stable and develop fast? Therefore, now marriages in proximity of bloods are commonly accepted as an immoral conduct and certainly rare happen in society. Had it not been for the development of technologies of genetic research, people may still marry with brothers and sisters and suffer great pain from the marriage. That's how the progress of technologies influence our social ethics.

However, though the great value of technologies stated above can not be ignored, it's still unconvincing to claim that they actually determine social customs and ethics, for the reason that technologies are made to benefit human beings in the final analysis. In contrast, it's social customs and ethics that determine the development of technologies. One apt illustration of this point involves the story about cloning human. In retrospect, when cloning and DNA manipulating technologies came into being, some crazy scientists depicted a future where men and women could be created entirely in test tubes with the most perfect genes they aspire. Nevertheless, though it has been many years since the birth of the first clone animal, a sheep named "Dolly" and we have reason to believe that cloning people is hard on the technique level, this assumption is strongly objected by sane people. It's mostly due to the moral problems for fear of definition of the identity of a cloned human. The controversies of nuke and euthnasia are the same case from which we can clearly see that without the admit of social customs and ethics, hardly can technologies be put into practice or get further development.

To sum up, although I agree with the claim that technologies influence social customs and ethics, I do not think the former can also determine the latter. After all, the spirit of a society is composed of people's minds. And since technologies are created by minds, they can never equal the power of minds. Therefore, it’s social customs and ethics that determine technologies.

The modern life gains lots of benefits from the dramatic advances in the technology. But the controversy arises some doubts about them because our quality of life has been deteriorated along with the advanced technology in some extent. As far as I am concerned, I maintain that technologies could influence social custom and ethics, not determine.

Admittedly, the tradition culture faces the monumental challenges when it comes to with the modern technology. The one factor of the cause is that latest technologies would catch up with hectic life in today. Consider the modern medicine and Chinese traditional medicine. Increased people in China are choosing modern medicine with a host of diseases such as cold, heart disease, ulcers and so forth because the medicine has a effective treatment and people would get rid of the pain from disease quickly. They have no time to spend because there are a multitude of tasks, either family or career, should be finished. It is generally acknowledged that Chinese traditional medicine spends so much time and it has a chronic process of treatment. Yes, that’s the case of this medicine. Nowadays, Chinese traditional medicine begins to be forgotten little by little. However, as a part of essential of Chinese culture, this would be a great loss if Chinese traditional medicine dies out. Although there are also many elders follow this idea and willing to spend enough time with them, but it is the fact that a majority of Chinese people would choose modern medicine. Consequently, modern medicine, as a part of technology, deteriorates the Chinese culture-Chinese traditional medicine.

Meanwhile, even though the great accomplishment in technology has brought a series of advantages with our life, but it disobey the ethics in some aspects. Few would divert from their normal way when they motivated by profits. For example, internet fraud would illustrate this point definitely. Internet is the symbol of development of today’s society and improves quality of our lifes, However, most criminals occur from the internet and cause significant loss with people or company. Hacker, the term of the people who steal the information from computer, is prevalent in the internet. He often intrude upon other’s computer to attain his purposes involves bring other virus to the computer, or gain the important information from the company opponent by breaking off the code of a computer. Obviously, these actions that are based on the internet- the great technology, disobey the ethical standards. In addition, the important thing is that the hacker in the Internet conceals the truth identity that would cause more crime because these criminal would be hardly to be found. This characteristic that totally differs from other ways of criminal would incite them to do more harmful things. As a result, I may conclude that the technology would serves to undermine the ethics in our life.

I concede that the technology exerts the profound impact on our socials custom and ethics, but the finally option to determine our behavior is our minds and willing. It is require the time to weigh the Chinese traditional medicine between advantages and disadvantages. Modern medicine might is `more effective than traditional medicine and would causes many side-effect as well. But the Chinese traditional medicine would cure your diseases entirely. So it is totally depends on your purpose with the disease. Moreover, the internet crime also has the same reason. If the one who masters the computer, has high self-control, and believes that the ethics are superior to profits, there’s no doubt it can’t be happened with hacker. On the balance, I firmly believe that the action of an individual is totally determined by his minds and willing.

From what we discussed above, we may jump to a conclusion that technologies could influence social custom and ethics, not determine.

Technology nowadays dose sever us in myriads of ways. Dose it sound ironically that we use our newly develop weapons to harm a person and use the advanced technology to save him back? In this issue, the author maintains that technology can affect and determine the social customs and ethics. But in my opinion, I agree with the technology can influence and determine the social customs but i disagree that technology can determine social ethics.

To begin with, it is true that technologies influence and determine social customs. Our daily lives have been greatly improved since the industrial revolution which took place in Europe in 18th century. The greatest scientist and inventor Edison brought us numerous meaningful inventions among which the light bulb was the most important invention to our world. We no longer use the fires and candles for lighting. He changed the working pattern of the society. The light bulb makes us work no matter in the daytime or in the night time and thus improving productivities. Another example is the youngest and richest CEO in IT field, Mark Zuckerberg the facebook founder. He created the social network for daily communication.  We no longer use mail to link us with our close friends and it changes our social lives, we chat online and share our favorite things with our friends. We might be little conservative in the past about our daily privacy but the facebook change our social customs and we become more open than before.

However, technology can influence social ethics but can not determine it. The social ethics which is believed to form by handing from generations to generations of social cultures and traditions. We can use the technology to influence how people believe in social ethics but we cannot completely to convert their believes. The harmfulness of near-relation marriage has been proved by the scientist in genetic approaches. It is a common sense nowadays that near-relation marriage causes the congenital diseases which neither of the parents want their lovely child to have; however, the fact is, there is still some people, especially in poor rural areas, the near-relation marriage  still exists, although the frequency of the outbreak of congenital diseases is very small. That is to say, we cannot determine their social ethics but we can influence them by the demonstration of the technology.

On the contrary, I suppose that it no the technology determines the social ethics but the social ethics determines the technology. Many technologies with harmful results have been forbidden by the social ethics. For instance, the human cloning, weapons of mass destruction (WMD), nuclear weapons and the biochemical weapons. These technologies are against the human ethics. Our human beings are longing for a peaceful world and a stable society. So as a result of that, researches about those subjects are limited in many ways. Another example is that, as the development of IT technologies, internet hackers have done some things that are against the social ethics such as looking into people's privacy and confidential personal information. This phenomenon determines the born of anti-hacker programs to guarantee the safety when surfing the internet.

In conclusion, the technology is absolutely a double-edged sword. There is no denying that we have benefited a lot from the technology; however, if without the guidance of the social ethics we cannot possibly put the technology into right use. Simply put, the social ethics determines how the way to rightly use the technology and finally leads us into a harmonious world.

Actually, the new ways of communication brought about by electronic technology have transformed the way we associate with each other in our daily lives. For instance, videophone makes video calling a reality by video technology. The videophone is a telephone with a video screen, and is capable of full duplex video and audio transmissions for communication between people in real-time. Using technical advances such as videophone, we can wave hello to our kids, share a smile from across the globe, or watch our best friend laugh(laughs) at our stories. There is no denying that the qualities of our living have gone from good to better with the development of technology.(这段与social customs和ethics有什么关系？可能与social customs有关系但是和上段可能有点重复)

However, we should not let technologies determine our ethics for we are creator（creators） of these technologies, and human are able to amend it(them) if the technologies go wrong. On the contrary, technologies reflect that the old cannons of social ethics, people can willingly adjust themselves to the new ethics rather than being command(controlled) by the technologies. For example, in the medieval times, women were easily believed to be wizards who spread diseases around cities, and therefore deserved burning to death; soon, our ancestors found that they were wrong, as they realized that the virus and bacteria were the real killer(killers); besides that(去掉that), more importantly, they acquired the technologies to treat certain diseases. During the story, although technologies play an important role, after all ,it is the human being who invented the technology and corrected the wrong logic of people.

In this day and age, people's life is synthesized with technological innovations. The convenience technology bring have already influenced the way people behave and live, and technology has been an indispensible part of daily life. As far as I concerned, technology can influence but not necessarily determine social customs and ethics.

In the first place, new technology can make average people change their attitude towards old views and rethink their social customs and ethics. Modern science brings about various possibilities and realizes fantasy scenes appeared in science fictions like submarine, spacecraft and so forth. Some innovations put people in a ethical dilemma so they have to weigh and balance between the profits technology brings and their ethical norms. For example, the cloning technology is a promising innovation because this technique could provide genetically identical tissues and organs for transplantation. Such tissues and organs would neither trigger an immune response nor require the use of immunosuppressive drugs. It is a breakthrough in treating diseases such as cancer, heart disease and diabetes. However, people cannot enjoy the benefits without any controversies. Cloning raises implications that the shape of family structure can be changed by complicating the role of parenting within a family of convoluted kinship relations. Some sociologists claim that it represents a grave offense to the dignity of that person as well as to the fundamental equality of all people. Therefore, it is easy to know technology can raise people's review on traditional values and they may reach a compromise after fierce collision.

Further, even if new technology can influence people's ideas to some extent, it can not essentially determine social customs and ethics. Empirical evidence informed us that social customs and ethics are determined by many combined factors like ethnic culture, religious belief and geographical conditions. Being cultivated in such environment, people are unlikely to change their customs by the mere technology innovations. Think about pilgrims, they travel a long journey to a shrine of importance to their beliefs and faith. With modern transportation, people can reach the every corner of world as easy as doing a simple math problem. However, the devout disciple contempt this because is considered to be disrespect of the god, sometimes they even impose strict restrictions on their journey to show their piety. So, it is clear that social customs and ethics are not easily determined by technology innovations.

From what I have discussed above, I am convinced that technology innovation play a pivotal role in improving people’s quality of life and change the way people live. However, there are eternal norms in people’s mental world that will never change with the development of technology.

Technologies are new ways of doing things based on modern knowledge about science. Social customs and ethics are long-established practice and embedded values. Human civilization is shaped by the constant technological progresses. Though technologies tremendously elevate the living standard of the world, many facets remain stable. Among them lie social customs and ethics which technologies cannot determine though have great impact on.

Social customs and ethics survive the social transformation triggered by technologies. The reason is that they represented the underlying values, which the identity of a nation relies on. For example, from the first Thanksgiving to the latest one, North American families keep having large meals together to celebrate and be thankful to food, health and families, although the vast America has evolved from a bare land to a sophisticated technological mecca. The ingrained value of gratitude remained unwavering. It serves as the source of vigor of a nation, considered as the common belief strongly uniting its citizens.

By contrast, social customs and ethics are actually the fundamental guidance of the technological development. Many scientists are intrigued by the juggernaut of technology, considering it the panacea to all the problems of human society. However, without conforming to the fundamental principles of human society, technologies may backfire severely. Clone is a topic that stirs extensive ethical reflection on technology. The scenario of many persons under the same identity is terrible. Human cloning will throw the society into identity tumult and crisis, which hugely violates the common belief that one’s identity should be protected. This example shows that social values actually confine technologies within its bounds.
