The basic ethical and moral standards are actually essential for a person to be an effective leader, however, in my view, the leader must be flexible enough to achieve the broader interest of people sometimes.
A great man once said, a great man makes a great leader. The high ethical and moral standards play a significant role in the birth of a great leader. Without the high moral standards abided by the leader, he would collapse into the abyss of the corruption. In that case, he wouldn’t be shamed when he accepted the bride and he would accept it one more time because he wouldn’t be blamed by the morality. When his corruption is exposure to the public, he would lose the credit of his advocates , so that it would be difficult to conduct his orders and ultimately his leader career would be end early .Thus, the high moral standards is the key to acquire the people’s credence ,which is the primary factor to become a good leader.
Admittedly, a effective leader must be equipped with the common basic morality, in order to produce a positive figure among the public people. But should the leader always be confined by the high moral and ethical standards ,such as honesty, even when it maybe harm the public benefit? For instance, if the government is going to declare a war to eliminate the terrorism in order to protect the public safety, is it necessary for the president to announce the details of their plan to his people for the sake of being a honest leader. If so, it would cost more ,involving the more war budge and more casualty , to win the war against the terrorists ,which would in turn cause a large damage to the public interest and pose a potential threaten to the safety of people.
From what has been discussed above, a great leader is obliged to observe the moral and ethical standards ,but when the public interest faces the moral standard , it should be given the priority. Our society is composed of people and the morality is created by people ,and the leader is elected by his people whose main objective is to serve the people and achieve the maximal benefit for people, so a great leader must put the public interest in the first place even if sometimes he may violate the moral and ethical standards. For example, in old age when the country is fail in the war, the lose side’s emperor would promise to submit to the winner forever. However, the great emperor would always break his promise for his people’s interest to get his people’s land back.
In sum, to be a effective and great leader, a public official must maintain certain high moral and ethical standards, however, the standards should under the broader interest of the public.
