What does history actually study? Then what really isthe core of historical studies? What should history study regarding daily livesof people? In my opinion, the reason why history study exists is due to itscontribution and enlightenment to human past and future.
There often a question came into our mind: is historyreally related to our life? Since we were young, we have learned history fromprimary school, ranging from the History of World, the History of AncientTimes, etc. It seems to us that history is something only exist on papers andbooks, they only belongs to those historians and scholars with thick glasses ontheir nose; they are distant to us. Take the study of anthropology as anexample. Anthropologists focus their attention on where had human beingssettled, what kind of cities had they built and what kind of life did theylive. Many people will question that what kind of relation set between ourdaily life and lives of those dead people? When we hear historians mentionabout the Travels of Marco Polo, we couldn't help thinking that he was just theman who crossed almost a continent to get to the ancient country China, does itmatter?
In fact, history study really matters in our dailylife. All history studies count to either inform us of those days we, as a kindof existence on the earth, have been through, or suggest what should we do inthe future and light up roads to a harmonious world. The study of anthropologytells us the paths that human beings have developed all the way through. Whatkind of house did they build, what kind of life did they live, did they eat thesame with us? The study of human opens us a window to know much better ofourselves, to know where we from are can help us find same creatures andwhether we are the unique among the universe. Many people are interested inthose mysterious Egyptian emperors, the reason why they built pyramid. Scholarswent there to find out the truth and then help us know more about the socialstructure and daily life of them.
Every path and event that we have been through isworth of studying. Learning the past, enable us to look ahead with faith sincewe have already learned lessons from our precedents. There's an old Chinesesaying goes: the remembrance of the past is the teacher of the future. WhenSARS broke out in 2003 through all over the world, we were frightened andscared, there was no disease like SARS before, it took us great effort todiscover recipes to cure patients in need. We could only call for help towardhistory, there were bunches of experiences that human have lived throughvarious diseases. When talking about the Second World War, scholars will alwaysmention the cause of the war and background behind it, in order to remind usthe horror and separation of family caused by terrible war, and thus illuminateus of the essential social structure and function of a country and a peacefulworld.
Newton once said, if I have been able to see further,it was only because I stood on the shoulders of giants. The same, the reasonwhy we can achieve such accomplishment so far is because we have learnedlessons from the history. Now we can launch our satellites and space craftsinto the immense space is due to the Industrial Revolution. Since then, theworld industrial field has developed rapidly, the steam engine, spinning Jenny, manpower has been replaced by mass production, an industrialized society hastaken place, from then on, and the globe experienced constant changes.
In conclusion, the study of history is not justrelevant to our daily life; it is derived from our life and closely connectedwith it. The study of history is records of what we have done, where we havebeen and how we have lived our life. History writes it down and generalizes itin order to remind us of how to live a better life. |
