题目:
"The video camera provides such an accurate and convincing record of contemporary life that it has become a more important form of documentation than written records."
*****************************************************************
Admittedly, video camera can document graphic content which seems more accurate and having more detail than written word. However, to assert video camera is of more importance than the written word is misleading and unreasonable. In fact, both video camera and written word are indispensable ways of documentation and either one is important. I will illustrate my point of view below.
To begin with, video record could reappear the situation and atmosphere of incidents lively by its graphic demonstration. Besides, video could offer more detail of the events since it includes every specific motion and expression of everyone it captured. Thereby, as the saying "seeing is believing" points out, video has its accuracy and convincing to some extent.
However, it is necessary to clarify that video camera, as a way of documentation, is no more accurate or convincing than written word. Frist, the creation of video always has certain purpose, either to record an event or convey some ideas of the creator. To server for the purpose, the capture of video, more or less, has to emphasis on the incident's certain side while ignoring others. Or, as an alternative selection, video camera could just record some incidents which have been directed first and performed by actors. For instance, it is common for news program on TV asking somebody to speak the words which the director prepared first. Second, lack of explicit description, video is easy misunderstood by audiences since everyone may has his/her own explanation. To illustrate this point, try to imagine a video which records many people walking on the street, some people may think the video is about the shops beside the road while others may have the idea of it is about those people. Third, there are many advanced technology of revising video content being widely used. Therefore, video could also be as subjective and inaccurate.
Moreover, comparing to written word, video camera has limitation that the capture of video is restricted by space and time. During capturing, the cameraman can only work on certain time in certain place. Even if the video is captured by several cameramen at the same time in different places, the content is still limited.
Nevertheless, written word is capable accounting any events happened just now or long ago and no matter where it happened. Besides, when faced with contracts or other kinds of legal documents, written word is the best choice since abstract notion can’t be captured by camera in real life. Furthermore, statistic data and research results could be handled well by written word while video can hardly find its way to popper demonstration.
In sum, all the analysis above indicates that both video and written word are important. All the common media nowadays employs both methods. We often watch programs on television that video is attached with commentaries or subtitles. While on newspapers and magazines, stories always appear with graphic pictures. These are evidence of proving either method is indispensable and critical. So, to document the contemporary life, written word is as important as video camera.
