"Only through mistakes canthere be discovery or progress."(138)
Across the historyof mankind, progress is always hand in hand with the failure. However, is thefail indispensable for every single progress? From my point of view, progressdoes not happen from failure itself but rather from analyzing the failure, making a change, and then trying again.
Empirical eventsand history lend considerable credence to the claim that mistakes pave the roadleading to progress and discovery. We are used to the story whose charactergain what he wants after a serial of mistakes. For example, Thomas Edison onlyafter thousands of failed trails of materials did he invent the electric bulbs;Abraham Lincoln competed for the member of congress for 11 times in total ofwhich 9 ended up as failures but he managed to be the 16th presidentof the USA. Thus, I concede that mistakes and failures are quite common eveninevitable on the way towards success.
However, mistakes obviouslywould not automatically lead one to the success. Put another way, whethermistakes are effective to help get closer to the ultimate goal lie in theattitude towards mistakes instead of mistakes themselves. Consider the factthat different people gain different ends after their failures. They all have sufferedfrom the pain-taking experience so what is the main force making themdifferent? After all no one would like to suffer from the mistakes if theycould accomplish their goal straight away. I think that’s the attitudes towardsmistakes. Someone merged in regrets and grief would fail again and again. Onthe contrary, people good at analyze the consequence would learn some tipswhich may not avoid them from failure but would definitely help to walk furtheron the way to success. Take for Nobel for an example, he lost five assistants includinghis brother during the experiment of nitroglycerin which is highly explosivesubstance. However, he did not stop experiment and tried actively to figure outsolutions to abate the danger during the transportation. Finally he inventedthe dynamite which is much safer in practical in use. If Nobel had not thoughtcircumspectly about the crux of failure he would not achieve the success evenlose his own life in the subsequent explosions.
Moreover, mistakes are not useful even harmfulunless they are directed to the feasible and just goal. That is to say, we haveto crystallize the purpose before we stick to anything otherwise mistakes wouldbring nothing but the waste of time and money. Just like the history ofperpetual motion which violates the basic law of energy. Despite the efforts ofmyriad scientists and countless failures none of them get a bit closer to thefinal goal since it dose not exist at all. Nevertheless, with respects for thehuman development history, although suffered from wars, diseases and hunger, our society are getting better and better. This is because most of peopledesire a peaceful and equal world and are willing to fight for it. Thus, Imaintain that the initial direction of any endeavors should be correct ormistakes are worth nothing.
To sum up, the speaker’s claim on the relationshipof mistakes and progress is not that precise. Though progress is alwaysaccompanied with mistakes, it is the attitude towards mistakes and the initialdirection of exploration that determines whether the mistakes would bring aboutthe discovery of something valuable.
