The issue of which one should be paid more emphasis on the study of history, the individuals or groups of people, is a complex one, since it involves a conflict between the contribution made by individuals and groups of people. In my point of view, they share the same importance in researching the history and promoting the development of the society. Therefore, the final judgment of which one is more important should depend on a case-by-case analysis of different situations.
  Admittedly, the spirits of the whole society consists of the minds of the populace, who serve as the basis of the society. It is the populaces’ minds that reflect the fundamental requirements of the majority of the society. The war of Resistance against Japan of China can be cited to illustrate this point. Chinese people united and fought against the Japanese to protect their country. Without considering the feelings of the populaces but only concerning on those historical figures, the researchers of history cannot fully comprehend the cause-and-effect relationship of this war. That is to say that the research of groups of people plays a pivotal role in study of history.
However, we cannot ignore the function of the individuals in history. Only those historical figures who have outstanding or precious personalities can be recorded in the history. They are the idols that the populace to imitate and run after. Their attributes are also learnt by people. Thus, these outstanding individuals reflected the value and the requirement of the society.
Simultaneously, like lights in the beacon guiding the ships in the dark sea, the individuals similarly provide guidance and impetus of the development of society. This point can be informed in the same example of The War of Resistance against Japan. Only by the hatred, but without strategy, can Chinese never beaten Japanese. Under such situation, the Chairman Mao of China made strategy and policies to lead Chinese fight against the Japan, and finally the war ended in a monumental victory.
Furthermore, it’s impossible to record everyone in the history, only those who had outstanding contributions could be memorized.
To sum up, due to the above mentioned reasons, the groups of people are the fundament of the society, without them the society would not exist anymore. On the other hand, the individuals play a role that guide direction of de development. Therefore, both of them cannot be distinguished from each other, they share the equal importance.
