2008.11.14Do you agree with the following statement? Children should play sports only for fun, and should not attend competitions and contests
The issue of how to educate children well is always of great concern for parents. And in recent years, there has been a widespread phenomenon that parents assert that their Children should only play sports for fun rather than play sports in competitions or contests because of the fear that their children getting hurt during sports competition. However, from my perspective, parents who hold such notion are misguided. Since children are deprived of the opportunity to go through difficulties, to learn important social lessons about winning and losing.
In the first place, taking part in sports competitions allows children to pursue the goal of success which cannot be offered by playing sports for fun. Before entering a contest children know that if he or she wants to win, to gain a prize, he has to spare no efforts to practice and practice. During the process of learning and improving, children gradually form the habit to pursue their goals, to chase their dreams. Faced with competitor, children will focus on the strategy of how to succeed instead of the entertainment of sports. All of these make sense for the growth of children.
It is undeniable that hoping to win glory is the main impetus for us to take part in sports competition, while what we have to bear in mind is that the journey of the sports contest not the result is essential. Sports competitions share a positive side in shaping the well-being of mentality, developing greater determination and endurance. Since Losing in sports competition is one of the best ways to teach children the lesson about success and failure, gain and loss ,and the restless spirits of never, never give up. If they cannot to face the loss and difficulties, how can they overcome the downs and turns of their future life?
What is more, taking part in sports competition has many other advantages to offer, which may include helping children to learn how to cope with pressures from inside and outside, exposing underlying problems in order to make better next time, telling them the meaning of fairness and justness, and leading them to be a scrupulous and impartial person.
In the light of the above argument, there seems to be no reason why children should not attend sports contests. I strongly believe that parents should encourage their kids to take par in sports contests which is a competent teacher who can equip children with mental and health well-being.
