正文：
The speaker asserts that since the world today is complex and new the past provides little guidance for living in the present. I agree with this assertion insofar as history will not give us a clear answer of those problems causing by technology advancements. However, we still can find many similarities between the present and the past in many situations, and the mistakes of the past can alarm us avoid repeating these tragedies.

To begin with, I concede that we are faced with many situations that never occurred before, so the past experience maybe of little use in solving these problems. The rapid growth of the Internet leads to a so-called information explosive age, in which what confuses people today is not how to get the knowledge but to filter the useful ones. The birth of Dolly, the first successfully cloned mammal, let us realize the possibility to reproduce a human. And the rising ethical issues on the reproductive cloning have been the most controversial debate for the last decade. The great improvement in the medicine saves numerous people’s life, however the following problems such as aging of the population and pressure in social welfare also appear. Those problems causing by the great progress in science and technology are so unique that we cannot find any ideas from the history. What we can do is just to use our own knowledge to solve these problems in the public’s opinion.

However a myriad of situation today are the same as it is yesterday. The racial prejudice, injustice incursion and violence are all timeless phenomenon, in which we can learn a lot from the history. Consider the crimes, a feature of all society at all times. Murders, rape and assaults are fairly common and accepted as an unavoidable part of ordinary life. Many policies to eliminate crimes prove to be impossible. The rehabilitation program carried in the USA during 1970s, the death penalty and the capital punishment all did little use of reduction the crime rate. So the criminologists have turned their attention from respond to crimes to the prevention of crimes by reducing the likelihood of certain groups of people who will engage in criminal behavior which seems more reliable. By learning the history, we can find various solutions to everlasting social ills. No matter whether they are effective or not, they all guide us to improve our policies to finally lead a perfect society.

Finally, from the mistakes we have made before, we will take actions to prevent it happens again. For instance, the use of nuclear weapons in the second world war in Hiroshima let us learn the destructive power, which may finally bring about the human extinction. So the Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty became effective and was accepted by most countries in the world. It is by the reflection of the tragedy already occurred make us commit to avoid repeating what does harm to our human beings. Another lesson the history teaches us is the Great Depression. The declines in output, severe unemployment, and acute deflation alarmed the economists and the governments that laissez-faire capitalism is not always effective and the macro-control by the nation is again given close attention. In short, by drawing a lesson from the past can we make today better.

In sum, it is over idealistic to get every idea when we are in trouble today since many situations are unique. Yet, we can still get some guidance from the past in solving many eternal social problems, and avoid making the same mistakes we made once again.
