TOPIC: ISSUE28 - "Students should memorize facts only after they have studied the ideas, trends, and concepts that help explain those facts. Students who have learned only facts have learned very little."

Decades of years ago, when we were still young, we would like to ask with starting of "why": why's the sky so blue? Why's the grass that green? Why's there comes night alter the day? Why are people different from each other? We have so many questions that we keep asking. Then, many years passed, the curiosity seems diminished or even disappeared. People nowadays hold the notion that only facts learned was very little, so that they require bringing up children with the willing not only to know the facts but also to study the ideas, trends, and concepts. However, the only memorize of facts are not a good idea; it not means we should learn anything with learning its ideas, trends, and concepts, for that is impossible and unnecessary.

Admittedly, the ideas, trends, and concepts are favorable elements that can help explain the facts we try to memorize, from which we could know further more about the facts themselves. We will find the links between the facts; we will know the principles where the facts come from; we will gain much more than we ought to learn. It would widen our field of view, enrich our knowledge, and fulfill our experience. Take the common knowledge in physics learning for instance. We all know about the law free fall that anything falls down with the same acceleration of gravity so that the time things fall is only related to the height. People only memorize the facts could just know that things at the same height fall down within the same time. But people who learn the ideas, trends, and concepts would learn that it is because of the acceleration of gravity which causes the facts. What's more, they will know, the resistance would lead to the different time even if things were in the same height. Therefore, the ideas, trends, and concepts let us know more about what the facts contained.

Even though the ideas, trends, and concepts are helpful enough, there still some facts we could not explain with either of them, like the origin of the space, the sixth sense, the connect between relatives and so on. People are trying to figure out what cause the facts but the answer was still in researching and there's no results or reasonable explaining yet. That is to say, some of the facts we could memorize still could not explain with ideas, trends or concepts, the trying to explain it with them are impossible till now.  In addition, the facts like the sun is shining, wound is hurt are unnecessary to explain.

However that not and would never means the ideas, trends and concepts could not paid attention to. There's no learning without thinking. To think about the ideas, trends, and concepts are methods that could help us in learning and memorize. Through that, we can think in our own way and with the thoughts and ideas by our own. We can try to explain and understand things with the knowledge we known and find out the answer by the way we have learned. From then on, we get the skill to lean and there would be nothing we can't learn. Finally, the real thing we've learned is the learning method and the habits to keep thinking. These are ultimately things which play remarkable roles in entire lifelong time and would influence us profoundly.

In conclusion, students should memorize facts after they have studied the ideas, trends, and concepts; as long as the ideas, trends, and concepts are possible to be learned; as long as they are useful and necessary in our daily lives or studies, as long as they due to the personal thinking. Or, the only studied the ideas, trends, and concepts are useless even though they are learned to help explain facts. Moreover, what would students learn is not depends on what they have learned, but what they are thinking and what they want to learn.
