TOPIC: ISSUE28 - "Students should memorize facts only after they have studied the ideas, trends, and concepts that help explain those facts. Students who have learned only facts have learned very little."

I agree with the speaker that the ideas, trends, and concepts can help students explain the fact they are supposed to learn. Because more of the knowledge concerning about the background and mainstream can inspire intellectual interests to learn and make the students to get a better understanding about the facts. However, we cannot ignore the basic skill of memorizing fact that is the very ground of higher understanding and further study; otherwise, students who learn ideas, trends, and concepts about the facts may feel confused before they come to have the basic facts in mind.
With more information about the background stories, recently reported news, and latest revolution based on the knowledge, learning facts becomes more acceptable and accessible to understand. Common sense tells us the reason why the majority of students who cannot learn knowledge well and put it into practice is that they are not informed of a well organized explanation to the fact. As an obvious result, it is entirely possible that the students with excellent intelligent fail to get through the knowledge let alone further study based on it. Without the necessary background and explanation of the knowledge instead of simply forcing the students memorizing the knowledge, the students stand to learn little in the process of study.
But it is insufficient to place studying of the ideas, trends, and concepts first before having memorized the principles and rules. A mathematician who is only knowing about the trend of current math can fail to calculate to get the final result
without knowing about the basic mathematic principles; An artists who are highly aware of the public aesthetic view to works of arts can also fail to create masterpieces without knowing about the basic creating ways. This demonstrates that many fields of human endeavor require basic knowledge about the fact so they can create higher level of works.

While explanation helps to better understand the fact play a momentous role in
the process of leaning, the consequential influence of memorizing facts are also not negligible. Memorizing the fact is just like copying from experience that has long been accepted by predecessors and other contemporaries. If having not bear the basic knowledge in one's mind, he may probably
confused about the ideas spreaded from the knowledge, misunderstood the mainstream based on the fact, and fail to get further study. Never a man can deny that the Chaucer's achievement in language is based on the thousands of recognition of words and different languages. Without memorizing the core meaning of words, the used phrases and linguistic structure, Chaucer may never become such a great man who has been regarded the authority of language today.

To sum up, the background stories, conceptions, mainstreams which can arouse interest and potential awareness of learning can help students learn well about the knowledge, while ignoring memorizing of facts can be placed more emphasis on the first step to learn is lacking in concerns. To learn the facts before concerning about the background can be the most effective way of engaging students into the world of learning.

今天刚好思考了下这道题,来说两句好了~
我的大体思路跟LZ差不多,也是先说死记硬背多么不好应该先理解后记忆之类的,举例是历史事件应该从它背后的发展趋势去记忆;
然后同样是指出不是非得after... LZ举的语言学习的例子我觉得蛮贴切啊,我就没想到。。我想到的是建筑系学生应该观察真实生活,从人们的客观行为中思考自己设计的起点,观察事实这是很重要的学习方式而不是单靠学习trends and concepts(呵呵因为我就是学建筑的。。。)
LZ文中还是有些语法小错哈,但今天没时间细说了~
