TOPIC: ISSUE153 - "Students should bring a certain skepticism to whatever they study. They should question what they are taught instead of accepting it passively."
Like any other issues in education, to what level the skepticism should be advocated is also questionable, though most of people would not object the advocacy of skepticism among the students in most of cases. It is no doubt that the skpeticism could arouse the interests and the creativity of individuals, however, we should not underestimate the importance of the diversity of different kinds of educations which determine the methods and targets of the directing on those receviers. Even the disparity of intellegence of students are also supposed to be taken into the consideration. Therefore, skepiticism should not be claimed for every student at any time.
To begin with, skepticism, for everyone, should be established on well understanding of knowledge. In other words, the skepticisim could not pre-exist ahead of learning basic knowledge. Although people may benefit from bringing the quests into the establishment of the understanding about the system of a whole subject, it is impossible for students to make any insightful argument for the basis of mathmatics like Kurt Godel, before learning the basic concepts and theorems in the textbook. After all, some of knowledge are too elementary and rigorous, which have endured the provement and charges of generations of scholars, to be overthrown. Without the learning the basic knowledge of a subject, nor would people do any useful critique torwards
Furthermore, not all of the students are capable of chllenging their textbooks and classrooms.
People are different at the difficulty of mastering a certain kind of knowledge, not only due to the gap of the intellegence but also the unsimilarity of think style.
So it is not more common that students always have inaccordant performance at learning something. Being skeptical of what their teachers intend to pour into their brains may not be realistic. Anyway, for a cetain ratio of learners, mastering the knowledge is not easy so far, not to mention messing with those stubborn doctrinaires.
Also, the statement neglect the different intentions and motives of going to the classroom. Clearly, we should consider the different target of education. For some career education, both educators and receviers pay more attention to the some practical way of dealing with some problems in reality. Only if accumulating some experiences in practices, people may find some way to make improvement.
Despite we should admit the positive side of skepticism to most of the intellectuals, the skepticism is by no means a positive attitude to be encouraged at any time. To make a assessment on some ideas thoroughly, we should take all kinds of cases as many as possible. At least, not all kinds of the learners would or could benefit from the skepticism anyway. |
