94"Universities should require every student to take a variety of courses outside the student's field of study because acquiring knowledge of various academic disciplines is the best way to become truly educated."
The graduates,in a sense, are the products of the higher education of the universities and colleges.Naturally, the ability that the students show after they get into the society is inevitably a measure of the quality of the higher education of a certain university where they are from.Unfortunately, few of them turn out to be truly educated, for a lack of broad knowledge,as well as the adaptibility to society, prevents them from succeeding.Hence,I strongly hold that universities should encourage every student to take a variety of courses outside the student's field of study for the reasons below.
In the first place, one does not need to go very far to see that in this era with booming science and technology, various academic disciplines are interrelated, which means the study of various courses outside one's own field of study may contribute to the study of one's own major. As human beings' scope of knowledge deepens and broadens, some of the academic disciplines are so intertwined that hardly anyone can tell exactly what the boundary of each is.FOR EXAMPLE,biology and chemistry, which were formly thought as two distinct subjects, have already merged as one that is called biochemistry now.And in recent years, due to its use in WMD(Weapons of Massive Destruction),growing concerns from the international society have been shown to it,as well as the Baghdad government which is believed to possess a large amount of these deadly weapons.Another case in point involves one of the most famous scientists of the twentieth century-----Mr.Albert Einstein. When Albert started to engage a deep research on physics,he found that his knowledge of mathematics could not lend enough support to his work,so he immediately suspended the research work and put his heart and soul into the study of mathematics. It was not until decades of years later before he resumed his research on physics again, which then resulted in the classical theory of Relativity. As stated above,no subject could exist and develop without the influence of other ones, therefore,it is self-evident that the study of courses outside one's field of study would definitely benefit the study of one's own major.
In the second place,by exploring subjects outside one's own major, one might find new academic fields where his real interest lies in.For most of us,we could go through the cruel competition of entering university, but when it came to the problem of major-choosing,we got bewildered, because we hardly knew anything about any major.Consequently, immature decisions were made,if not at random. As one of my classmates,Ross, once put,"I am not regretful to take up the major that I am studying now,it makes no difference if I have chosen another one because even I myself could not tell what field my interest lied in."In this condition, only after one has taken a variety of courses outside his own major could one learn more knowledge and more about oneself. What is more,he might also see where his real interest lies in.In this sense, taking various academic disciplines other than one's own field of study is a necessary part of one's self-improvement.
However, taking courses outside one's own field of study should be optional a thing rather than a must-do,that means, additional courses ought to be provided for all the students with the school board's encouragement instead of requirement.Nevertheless, certain requirements of the major courses should be set as the prerequisite that is to be met by the students before they put their extra energy into the additional courses.
To sum up,I insist that universities should not only encourage every student to take a variety of courses outside the student's field of study, but also provide proper additional courses for all the students to choose from according to their interests. Thus,a truly educated graduate appears. |
