题目:ISSUE40 - "Scholars and researchers should not be concerned with whether their work makes a contribution to the larger society. It is more important that they pursue their individual interests, however unusual or idiosyncratic those interests may seem."

The interests of the researchers provide them an agenda, while their contributions to society are what count on.

Granted, the interest plays an important role in the science development, as it supports scholars and researchers to continue their course, no matter how hard it will be. One of my tutors has once said that "It is cruel to force you to attend my class if you don't have any interests in it. And I also believe it is a waste of time when you actually could do something more significant instead." Personally, those words really inspire me with the opinion that interest should guide the learning and you will achieve more. The founder of Facebook is a young man who is interested in the new media internet and successfully managed to attract more and more people to share on the internet. In spite of the opposite opinion from the society and family, Mary Curie who became the first woman with two Noble Prizes resolutely followed her interest and chose to study chemistry in Paris University.

However, individual interests should not be the only goal of scholars pursuit on science. Considering what the society needs, or will the study helps society, is also critical to the scientific study. Einstein has once said that what determines a person is not what he gets but what he contributes. Though we don't appreciate that scientists should devote themselves into the society with regardless to their personal needs and interests, we really admire those people, such as, Edison who invents bulbs that lightens every family and every house, Bill Gates who invents Windows that every one and every organizations could do their work more efficiently, etc. The works, inventions and discoveries left to the world become the heritages of human beings as whole. What's more, the needs of the public or society can also transform to an impetus that push science forwards and spreading, perhaps accomplishing much greater achievements.

On the other hand, no matter how strenuous it is and how they are interested in it, the scientists and their studies that can not be used to the progress of society or even retrogress society is meaningless, useless and even harmful. Many countries and scientists try hardly to research the nuclear power which could be utilized to make electricity or to produce nuclear weapon. If the world really become the one described in the essay of Cater that nuclear war ruins the earth with heavy dust and people die out because of lacking sunlight covered by the dust, I believe nobody will regard the nuclear as a historic achievement, though it once helps the society and such scientific achievement can't be named achievement.

In sum, the interest is an important guidance and impetus to the science, yet connected the interest with the needs of the society will make results more significant. For those harmful interests, every moral scientists should abandon them.
