Is progress best made through discussion among people with opposite views?

To large extend, I agree that progress is best made through discussion among people who have contrasting points of view, as the speaker asserts. Nevertheless, discussions with the people who share the same view also benefit both side greatly. On balance, I fundamentally prefer the idea that one can make progress through discussions with other people, no matter whether the two sides share the same views or not.

Admittedly, discussions with people who have contrasting points of views will

greatly prompt the birth of new ideas. The very essence of discussion is the give birth to new ideas, in my opinion.
As a matter of fact, discussions in a intense atmosphere could largely give rise to the broadening of horizon. Discussion is a way to get the truth or the conclusion from a variety of facts, experiences and so forth among people. In this sense, when broadening our horizon, we tend to have more complicated ideas, thus resulting in a perfect conclusion accounting for any possibility that may have a influence on the conclusion. Debate is always held between people with the opposite point of view. According to a survey held by International Debate, 89% of the respondents from nearly all groups of the society said they can get a lot in minds through debates.

However, it is detrimental for the arguers, who are usually shy and are not willing to express
himself or herself in front of others, to have a discussion with the people who do not share the same ideas. Usually there the some people who are shy and prefer a peaceful discussion, which is an important factor we cannot ignore. If you force the one to discuss with people who have contrasting points of view, it will make little progress for both sides.

Also the stubborn people can get little from discussion. The philosophers hold their points of views so strongly that they have little tolerance for the opposite views. So it is useless to have a discussion with that kind of people.

Another compelling argument that aptly illustrates the conclusion that discussions among
people with the same points of view is that harmonious atmosphere ,at some degree, could contribute to the progress in discussions. When discussing with the people who shares the same point of view, you can feel the peaceful and friendly atmosphere and it greatly eases the tension. And you do not have to be in a fear emotion that your idea will be denied. Often on this condition you will be free to express what you really think and how you really think about the idea.

In summary, discussion among people with people, no matter he or she shares the same points of view with you or sides the opposite of your point of view, will usually make great progress. Nevertheless, to discuss among people who have contrasting points of view can greatly result in the birth of new ideas. On the other hand, discussions among people sharing the same views can also make everyone to express his or her view freely, thus getting a good conclusion in which great progress is made. In the final analysis, progress will best made in a discussion only if everyone involving in it express his or her point of view totally.
