TOPIC: ARGUMENT79 - The following appeared in a magazine for the trucking industry. "The Longhaul trucking company was concerned that its annual accident rate (the number of accidents per mile driven) was too high. It granted a significant pay increase to its drivers and increased its training standards. It also put strict limits on the number of hours per week each driver could drive. The following year, its trucks were involved in half the number of accidents as before the changes were implemented. A survey of other trucking companies found that the highest-paid drivers were the least likely to have had an accident. Therefore, trucking companies wishing to reduce their accident rate can do so simply by raising their drivers' pay and limiting the overall number of hours they drive." WORDS: 578 TIME: 00:29:34 DATE: 2011/3/6 20:57:02 In this argument, the arguer concludes that raising drivers' pay and limiting the overall number of hours they drive may reduce their accident rate. To strengthen this conclusion, the arguer points out that Longhaul trucking company by granting pay to drivers, increasing training standars and limiting the number of hours, the accidents number of accidents were greatly shortened. The arguer also cites a survey indicating that the highest-paid drivers were the least likely to have had an accident. The argument might be somehow reasonable at first glance, but close scrutiny reveals that it is ill-conceived. The reasons are stated as follows. To begin with, the arguer assumes that it is granted pay, increase training standards and limits the number of hours driver drive that decrease the number of accidents. Although this is entirely possible, the arguer offers no evidence to substantiate this assumption. It's possible that its not these behaviors, that decrease the accidents. An appropriate example is not very difficult to seek. Truck in Longhaul trucking company were old and ill-functioned, most of the trucks brakery could not used, that's the cause of high accident rate. The following year, Longhaul trucking company changed all their trucks and since then, the rate decreased significantly. Furthermore, the arguer fails to tell the exact number of accident rate. Maybe 1% accident rate is too high for Longhaul company. If so, the half number of accidents may not so significantly changed. Without ruling out all such possible phenomenon, the arguer could not assume that it is driver's problem that cause the high accident rate. In the second place, the arguer's assumption that raising drivers pay may decrease accident rate depends on the fact that highest-paid drivers were the least likely to have had an accident. However, the arguer does not afford any evidence to confirm this assumption. Maybe it is drivers' skill other than their willingness towards the accident rate. Further more. Common sense informs that the highest-paid drivers often are the most skillful drivers in the company, their accident rate of course are low. In the third place, the arguer assumes that what Longhaul trucking company afford to their drivers will also work with other trucking companies. However it might not be true. Perhaps other trucking companies' drivers are now as skilled as drivers in Longhaul trucking. If this scenario is true, the arguer cannot conclude that raise drivers' pay and limiting overall number's will also decrease accident rate as Longhaul trucking do. Finally, even if the evidence turns out to support the foregoing assumption, the arguer simply recommend that raising their drivers' pay and limit driving hours will reduce their accident rate. However, no strong evidence is provided to affirm this assumption. The arguer misconsider the other companies economy problems. Maybe other companies are not so wealth as Longhaul trucking company do , or maybe just limit the overall number of hours only will reduce their accident rate. To make the conclusion more convincing, the arguer must expain either why none of these alternatives is avaliable or why none of them is able to sustain. To sum up, the arguer's conclusion about raising drivers' pay and limiting the overall number of hours will reduce their accident rate is not well supported as it stands. In order to draw a better conclusion, the author must provide more evidence such as Longhaul trucking company's truck problem or other trucking companies economy situation. And the arguer should also take every possible consideration into account.
