TOPIC: ISSUE50 - "In order to improvethe quality of instruction at the college and university level, all facultyshould be required to spend time working outside the academic world inprofessions relevant to the courses they teach."


With an increasingly manifold developmentof technology and science, educators concern more and more about the quality ofinstruction at the college and university level. Varieties of

countermeasureshave been taken to enhance this procedure and encouraging faculties to spendtime working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the coursesthey teach is one of them. From my perspective, the basic responsibility ofeducators, especially those teachers, that guarantees students reap enoughknowledge as well as technologies is the priority educators should take intoaccount, rather than focus on some minor methods such as working outside the academicworld slimly in relevant to what they teach.

It is commonsense that school facultiesshould share no efforts to instill knowledge to students with any possibleapproaches positively in respect to different education levels, specifically incollege or university education before students embark on their graduate study.Gaining basic principles of the major lays road to the profound areas of thissubject whatever one learns. My mentor always admonishes me that anyone whowants to step into the research field should firstly learn enough basicknowledge in relation to the area. It may include the very basic subject suchas math, physics, chemistry as well as some more specific major subjects likemolecular biology, genetics, virology and so forth. She told me that “only whenyou fully comprehend the basic knowledge can you walk further in this specificarea, and this is what your teacher gave to you in your earlier education.”These words told us the very importance and significance of instructing studentbasic knowledge which is the primary task of school faculties.

As the foregoing experience showed, withouta comprehensive understanding of the basic knowledge, one may lose his or herfeet when dabbles into the specific research field and thus harvest nothingremarkable in the end. In order to build a strong basis all faculties ofcolleges and universities should insist on providing the book knowledge namelysome classical information for students primarily. It calls for a dedication toguarantee that school faculties focus on teaching as much basic knowledge aspossible to students whatever their major is. Unless they receive a generalknowledge ablution first these students can not fully prepared to go anyfurther in their study career. In this case working outside the academic world isnot permitted in such a limited time and energy.

However, it is also a wise action to takesome creative measures to stimulate education efficiency which may lead abetter instruction quality, but it depends on different education field variesfrom art, history to science and economy. In respect to science and economy, byworking outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses thefaculties teach can increase their experience and understanding of their fieldwhich may consequently stimulate more students to study harder and improve thequality of instruction. School faculties become increasingly passionate andexperienced in the instruction of students through this outside workingprocedure. Take Professor Mirkin in Northwestern University for instance, he combinesinstruction of students with operator of his companies and that works instimulating his students to work harder from their deep heart. Nevertheless, asidefrom the positive effect of working outside the academic world, there exist moredisadvantages when too much emphasis was laid on it. Faculties may bedistracted from the most important responsibility of teaching and such leads toa counterproductive effect. The more time they spend on working outside theless energy be left to teach students. Therefore faculties should control thistime distribution in respect to what they teach as majors like art and historyrequire less social experience but it’s not the case concerning science andeconomy.

In sum, with such a high speed of scienceand technology development, what educators should do in order to improve thequality of education is to find a balance between basic knowledge instillingand outside working experience sharing. Only when college and universitystudents master a general understanding of increasingly specific information onthe basis of a large amount of classical knowledge can we expect a higherquality of education at the college and university level.
