233"Although innovations such asvideo, computers, and the Internet seem to offer schools improved methods forinstructing students, these technologies all too often distract from reallearning."
From the merit of rapid development ofhigh-techs, innovations such as video, computers and the Internet really helpschools to offer students with the best and advanced methods to study. However, the speaker asserted that those so called innovative technologies all too oftendistract students from real learning, which I highly disagree with, as the realreason or element that may lead students deviate from their study is theirpossessiveness and lack of proper guidance and certain restrictions.
Stand from the point of view of thoseobjectors, it is not difficult to find that the main reason that they considerthose highly advanced technologies are less welcomed is that they may easilydistract students from their study but various different recreation andentertainment such as, computer games. Yet, I find this assertion highlyuntenable for the following reason. Most importantly, what indeed determineswhether a student can take the best use of those technologies rather than just wastingtheir time on computer games is his or her possessiveness--the ability tocontrol oneself when faces with tempt. A self-evident example to illustratethis problem is that even if schools remain their original methods to give alesson, in other word, excuse those advanced technologies, students with weakpossessiveness are still in great possibility to read irrelevant books, orchatting with others freely in the class rather than paying fully attention tothe professors, while students with strong possessiveness, in whateverconditions remain the same, if equipped with prior technologies will be evenmore enthusiastic and assiduous on their study. After making certain accordanceon this issue, it is not difficult to find the best way to avoid misuse ofthose advanced technologies--teachers and parents should make certainrestrictions on how to use a computer and instruct students to use it in aproper way.
After that, based on the basicquality--possessiveness of a student, those technologies can indeed show theirgoodness and I assert that they have two main merits in the following argument.
First of all, speaking of students, especially those assigned with heavy research papers, if equipped with the bestinnovative technologies such as computers, they can make the best use ofInternet to Google on the world's most famous encyclopedia"Wikipedia" for various information they need in no more than 30seconds and as much as possible. Not to say watching Discovery which providesstudents with vivid and chromatic images that explicating and representing thelong extinct dinosaurs. Also, other popular channels such as National Geographyaffords those assiduous students with the best video-informed courses, whichnot only help to raise their interest, but more providing a visual lesson forthem what may be only a black and white picture in the past. The previousexamples aptly help to illustrate the benefit of advanced technologies forstudents study,
From the standpoint of teachers, evolvedtechnologies such as computers not only serve as a more convenient andsimplified method compared with the past, but more attribute to keep them fromsevere respiratory diseases. Prior to the era of advanced modern technologies, teacher tend to spend plenty amount of time writing on the blackboard toillustrate a simple question “How cyclone appears”, while today he or she onlyhave to download a video the Origin of Cyclone and present it to all thestudents involved and make a PPT for further illustration. Meanwhile, considerthe health of teachers, in the past overate dust of chalks easily causes severerespiratory disease, such as Pneumonia and Tuberculosis, howbeit with in use ofcomputers and videos these commonplace among teachers are seldom seen.
To sum up, so far as I am concerned, withproper instruction, guidance and certain restriction, it is manifest thatinnovative technologies overweight their merits to blemish as they not onlyhelp to offer better ways for students to absorb knowledge, but also assistteachers to impart knowledge in a more convenient, simplified andhealthier way.
