题目:ARGUMENT193 - The Department of Education in the state of Attrarecommends that high school students be assigned homework every day. Yet arecent statewide survey of high school math and science teachers calls theusefulness of daily homework into question. In the district of Sanlee, 86percent of the teachers reported assigning homework three to five times a week, whereas in the district of Marlee, less than 25 percent of the teachersreported assigning homework three to five times a week. Yet the students inMarlee earn better grades overall and are less likely to be required to repeata year of school than are the students in Sanlee. Therefore, all teachers inour high schools should assign homework no more than twice a week, if at all.

In the argument, the arguer suggests thatstudents in high schools should be assigned homework no more than twice a week.To support his/her recommendation, the arguer cites a study of two districts inthe nation, which reports that a larger percent of students gets lower overallgrades when assigned more homework in math and science. While this argumentseems to be reasonable at first glance, a deep analysis makes it unconvincingfor several reasons.

The fundamental problem with the argumentis that the arguer unfairly cites the survey to support his conclusion. However, the survey is statistically problematic. Firstly, the survey wasconducted in only two districts in the nation, and it is not representative atall. It is quite likely that parents in Marlee place more emphasis towardstheir children's education and assign homework to their students at home, thusa higher grade while less homework from teachers. If the arguer wants to extendthe conclusion to the whole nation, he should at least provide more analysisabout the similar characteristics of other districts to the two districts insurvey. Secondly, the arguer unfairly compares the survey of math and scienceto the overall grades. Yet, it is very likely that teachers of other subjectsassign more homework, which exerts positive effects to students' grade of othersubjects. Thus the overall grade will be higher. Since the arguer cannotexclude that whether grades in math and science increase or decrease, thearguer cannot conclude that the less homework, the better grade. Thirdly, thearguer does not tell that the amount of the homework each teacher assigns. Itis very likely that the total amount of homework assigned by teachers in Marleeis larger than the other one. Thus, the survey is unconvincing at all to makebe accept the suggestion.

Another problem with the arguer'ssuggestion is its feasibility and effectiveness. The arguer suggests that allteachers should reduce that homework, which may arouse complain from theparents in that parents are believing for so long time that assigning homeworkfacilitate their children's grade. While without the homework, what will theirchildren learn from school? Granted that the parents can accept this new idea, the effectiveness of this action is open to doubt. As we all know that lesshomework means that students can spend more time on playing games or otherthings. Being attracted by those fascinating stuff will make student not concentrateon study even at school. They will be more likely to distract during the classtime. Therefore, the arguer should substantiate the feasibility andeffectiveness of his/her recommendation.

Last but not least, the arguer suggeststhat teachers should assign homework no more than twice a week. However, noevidence is provided in the argument to support this frequency. If the surveydoes means that the less homework in math and science, students should not doany homework at all. This may be the best suggestion from the arguer'sperspective. However, the arguer fails to explain this suggestion well.

In conclusion, the argument has many flaws. To strongly render it persuasive, the arguer should at least provide moreinformation about the survey, which is the foundation of this suggestion, suchas the scores in math and science, other possible factors that influence students’grades, the total amount of homework in each district. Moreover, the arguershould conduct a survey to persuade student's parents and explain the reasonfor the necessity of twice homework a week.
