The reading passage proposes threesolutions to address the decline of Torreya. However, the lecturer says that noneof the three solutions would be successful and satisfactory.
First, the reading passage suggests reestablishingTorreya in the same location where it thrived for long time. This is objectedby the lecturer because the microclimate has changed a lot there. The wholeclimate and global warming has made the place drier and warmer than before.Many wetlands have been drained. So the original place is not suitable for thegrowth of Torreya anymore.
Second, the lecturer argues that to moveTorreya to an entirely different location will make damage to the local plants.She uses the example of black locus to demonstrate it. When the black locusmoved to a different environment, it influenced the growth of local plants andkilled many other trees which are already decreasing. So the method movingTorreya to an entirely different location would also be unsuccessful.
Final, the lecturer is against with the thirdsolution because preserving Torreya in research centers would make them notsurvive from the disease. The Torreya growing in a natural environment canresist the disease with a large and diverse population. However this conditioncan not be provided in the research centers. Thus preserving Torreya inresearch centers would be a bad idea.
