Just talked with a faculty member in the department about how they choose international students from China.

The most important point, he mentioned several times, is good recommendation.  If the professor who gives you recommendation happens to be a friend of one faculty member and says in the letter, I am a friend of Dr. XXX, and XX is a very good student, I think he could meet your requirements. They will consider it seriously, most likely by giving the professor a phone call to check, since they know most of the students in China write letters on their own. So when they check with the professor, and the professor says yes, he is a good student instead of who are you talking about. Very likely you will be admitted. In addition, since some professors here have very good network in China, if they are interested in you, they may also check with the man who give you the recommendation to see if you are really good or not. The best student I have seen means a lot in the recommendation since they think even the best student in a bad college is still good or the best in the country. However, the second best student sucks.

Good papers will also help you to leave a good impression because they think it is hard for an undergraduate to be productive(it really is). After that, they will also consider Test scores, and GPA.

They also know some universities in China are among the top level, and they like students from these universities, such as Peking University, USTC. It is also very helpful if you know some graduate students in the department and they are willing to give you strong recommendation to committee members. Like I know this guy, he is my friend, he is as good at chemistry as me, you could not afford to miss him. In this case, you will at least be an outstanding case among the applicants. They might arrange an interview for you to see if you are really good as mentioned or not.
