issue-179 "What most human beings really want to attain is not knowledge, but certainty. Gaining real knowledge requires taking risks and keeping the mind open—but most people prefer to be reassured rather than to learn the complex and often unsettling truth about anything."
感觉这个题目的主旨句是前面的“What most human beings really want to attain is not knowledge, but certainty”,后面的话是起补充说明用。所以我在论述中对后面的一那句话论述较少,不知道是否妥当。 欢迎大家来指正批评。
I firmly belive that "What most human beings really want to attain is not knowledge, but certainty." While the statement above seems to implicate this fact as a depressing one. In my point view, along the long stream of history, the seek of certainty not only is but deserve to be the paramount aim of our daily life. This will be illustrated in both scientific field and our daily routine.
When we retrospect to seek the origin of science, we shall find that it primarily derives from the religious act which aim at solving the many mysterious phenomena that is beyond our understanding. It is the inborn nature of human being, which is called curiosity, that urge our ancestors to seek the truth behind those mystery and try to gain a definite answer--the certainty. After they make more observation and drill deeper into the exterior phenomena, they find something that seems to reveals the secret and could partly explain the mystery, but when they got to this higher stage, more complicated problems arise from the core part of the phnomenon, then our curiosity stimulate us to go deeper. As the cirle goes, more problems were solved while more complicted ones appear. we are geting nearer to the final truth. During this process, those we have learned and the methods that we used was calculated and deposited as "knowledge". And these calculated knowledge will serve as useful tools in the further resaerches leading to more certainty. Here we could find that knowledge is actually a byproduct and a tool during the process that we seek certainty.
When comes to our daily routine, most of us enter schools to learn various kind of knowledge from very young. But for many people, the learning of knowledge is not for its own sake, what they want is something that could benefit from their gained knowledge, for example, the knowledge gained in medical schools help a doctor to determine what's wrong with his patient, to give what kind of treatment to heal him most efficiently; the knowledge acquired in the commercial school help to sharpen a person's mind and enables him to make profit in the market. Those knowledges, which serves as requisite to reach a specific goal, is the most common kind of knowledge that exist in every society. And those who hold these knowledge, even though they are not interesing or have no insightful ideas to them, is not to blame, for we are none of us born to drill into complex thoeries and detect the secret of universe. Most of us are just ordinary people who serves as a small but significant factor that keeps the society a harmonious and peaceful place.
Of course there are also those who devote their life to the scientific research field and always keep their mind open while taking risks to gain those newest and most intangible knowledge, they are the pioneers of our age who were charting new waters for our human race, and their work are highly lauded by all of us. But even the work they are engaging is still a process aiming to a certainty--a more definite thoery, a more acurate explantation, a more concrete illustration and so forth.
In sum, it is our inborn curiosity that stimulate us to seek the truth behind phenomena which we call certainty, knowledge get birth from that process and serve as tools in the further research which aims at more certainty.
