题号:3
题目:Educationalinstitutions have a responsibility to dissuade students from pursuing fields ofstudy in which they are unlikely to succeed.
要求:Write a response inwhich you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the claim. Indeveloping and supporting your position, be sure to address the most compellingreasons and/or examples that could be used to challenge your position.

The speaker asserts that educational institutions have a responsibility to dissuade students from pursuing fields of study in which they are unlikely to achieve success. I strongly disagree with the speaker’s claim, because the teachers of the educational institutions cannot make correct judgment for every student and the character of the students may also change in their lifetime. Nevertheless, that does not mean educational institutions have no duty to inform the students how to make a occupational plan for future.
On the one hand, neither can teachers know exactly every aspect of every student, nor can they make objective and suitable judgments on which field of study the student might succeed or not succeed. For example, when Albert Einstein was young, he was regarded by the teacher as having not talent in mathematics and physic. However, little Einstein was not frustrated by the teacher’s remarks, but instead he adhered to his interest. Through years of great efforts and hard work, Einstein has finally become one of the greatest physicists in twentieth century, which in turn proved that Einstein had an unimaginable gift in physics.
On the other hand, even though the teachers’ judgments are currently correct, it does not mean their judgments will be right forever, since the character of students may change in the process of study. For example, art requires imagination which a student might originally did not have, but after training of imagination, it is quite possible that the ability of the student’s imagination may be enhanced greatly. In addition, there are numerous examples that students who were not good at math can solve difficult math problems after finishing a lot of exercises. Because the students are young, they can become any person they want to be and excel in any kind of work they want to do. In sum, it is irresponsible for a teacher to make a judgment on the fields of the students in which they might succeed.
However, since the teachers are older and more mature than the students, it is advisable for the students to take careful consideration of their advices. Thus, the educational institutions do have a duty to offer advices, not judgments, to the students on which field they might succeed.
In sum, it is irresponsible for educational institutions to make such judgments as to which fields of study their students are unlikely to succeed for the teachers have no full knowledge of their students to enable them make correct judgments and the students’ characters may change over the life time. But the educational institutions must assume the responsibility to provide students with suitable advices on the occupational choices.
