In my view, I would prefer to give my friend a gift card instead of a gift for two important reasons.
First, it's convenient . For example, I don't need to spend too much time for thinking about what kind of gift my friend would like. Also, I don't have to go to the shopping mall where is always really crowded.
Second, it's the best choice for my friend. For example, last year, my friend gave me a gift card instead of a birthday gift. I spent this money on a coffee marker which I was looking for a long long time. And every time when I make a coffee, I miss my friend how kind he is.
That's the two reasons I would choose a gift card instead of a gift.
