"Colleges and universities should offer more courses on popular music, film, advertising and television because contemporary culture has much greater relevance for students than do arts and literature of the past."

As the society is developing, our daily life is being influenced, changed, and even badly damaged comparing with the people's life in the past. Popular music, film, adivertising and television, through which many newly-born things break into our life, become an indivisible part of our life.

From the person who whistling a new popular song when walking on the street and so many people watching television every day, no one can deny that these things have close relevance for us. It makes us feel that we are modern people. In this respect, to offer more courses on contemporary culture is reasonable.
However, it does not mean that I agree with the point that contemporary culture has much greater relevance for students of colleges and universities than do arts and literature of the past. On the contrary, I hold the point that arts and literature of the past, if not more than, has as much relevance for students as contemporary culture.

The past arts and literature is the crystal of human intelligence, especially the ones that still remain until now, the poems filled with human emotions, the novels full of moving senses and the plays telling the mysterious stories we have never heard. Most of the eniment scientists show great enthusiasm on past arts or literature, when some people think that they must be too absorbed in their researches to do so. Yang Zhenning, who was awarded with the Nobel Prize, is famous for his lively speeches. Su Buqing, who is a outstanding mathematician, is fond of literature and writes poems when he has time. They absorb the nutrition of past arts and lierature and have greatly satisfaction through it. Don't you see the charm of past arts and literature?

Still, some one thinks that we should not know so much of the past arts and literature, a little knowledge will be enough for daily life, also it is too tired to know so much. I would say, this statement is thoroughly wrong. Why? Some one may ask immediately. As a famous thinker cited, no knowledge is better than a little knowledge. Also, just a little knowledge of arts and literature of the past is bound to be not enough for daily life. We are in a society which is still attach importance to past arts and literature, people who know much of past arts and literature is welcome. Take the example of my friend Lisa, who can easily find a common topic with new friends because she knows a lot of traditional culture. You will find it difficult to have a last-long talk with other people merely on the topic of contemporary culture because it is easily forgotten and rapidly changing. I am sure you will be engaging in past arts and literature after talking with Lisa, for the charm of it is glaring.

To be more complete, some contemporary culture may one day change into "past arts and literature" of the future society, we ourselves is producing "past arts and literature", too.

So, more courses on contemporary culture should be offered and no past arts and literature courses be deleted.
