Issue 54 history teaches us only one thing: knowing about the past cannot help people make important decision today.
历史只教会我们做一件事:了解过去并不能帮助今天的人们在重大的事情上做决定 。
Undoubtedly it is true that the current world is quite different from the past with the rapid progress of society, but one shouldn’t go too far to allege that knowing about the past does little to make important decision today. Several critical benefits from studying history make it absolutely necessary for us to frequently look back to the past for useful guidance and wisdom.
For one thing, the current originates from the past; what happens today is generally the result or reoccurrence of the yesterday. Learning the past, therefore, can greatly improve our understanding over the contemporary world, which is very critical to ensure qualified decisions. Without a glimpse to the history of relationship between the Jew and the Islam, one cannot understand such a strong hatred underlying in Israel and the Arab world against each other. And without a investigation into the traditional culture of Japan, one would have no possibility to understand why the Japanese enterprise places so much emphasis on cooperation between individuals or enterprises while the rest of the world highlight the role of competition. In a word, the more one learns the past, the deeper one understands the current and the more possibly one could make an effective decision today. To grasp this point, one shouldn’t go too far to see the case of Carlos Ghosn, the CEO of Nissan who was born in Brazil and educated with western culture of management but have successfully prevented Nissan from going to bankrupt and revitalized this famous automobile manufacturer in only three years. According to Ghosn, one of his keys to success should be attributed to his deep comprehension over the merits and shortcomings in the traditions of Japanese management, which help him make many critical decisions in the process of reforming Nissan.
Learning the past not only can help people understand the current better and therefore enhance the effectiveness of their decisions, but also can provide people today with some direct and useful guidance in the form of experience, principles or applied philosophy and so on. During the past thousands of years, our ancestors have accumulated countless of knowledge which is still valuable for the current life. Take the famous military writing “the art of warship”, written by ancient Chinese author SunZi who lived more than two thousand years ago, for example. Although this great work primarily concerned with the ancient war, it has generalized many universal principles still useful today. Due to the nonesuch wisdom and practicality in these principles, this work has been widely designated as a textbook in almost all military schools through the world. Chairman Mao, the former leader of China, has ever used the military principles in that work to defeat all his military opponents including America in the Korean War. It is also reported that the American commanders often read “the art of warship” during the Iraq War occurred several months ago. Even some successful Japanese entrepreneurs also say they often turn to that military book for enlightenment and wisdom. All above vividly indicate that many essences of human civilization in the past are still practical and useful to help the modern people make important decisions.
Last but not the least, as Bacon has pointed out, one of benefits of studying history is to make people wise; undoubtedly this gain in the respect of intelligence and mentality can be contributed to the effectiveness of people’s daily decisions. People today have long downplayed this role of history in honing and shaping their intelligence; they place too much emphasis on the development of rationalism and scientism, unduly believing science can resolve any problem. Under this kind of educational environment, people’s ability of logic reasoning and scientific calculating may get a significant improvement, but there is little progress in their holistic or strategical thinking. That is to say, science fails to bring the modern people the desired improvement on intelligence and wisdom. That is why human today often make some stupid mistakes again and again. However, studying history can provide human with an outlet through which people can obtain a substantial enhancement in intelligence and wisdom. This ability combined with logic and scientific thinking will bring about the most efficiency and effectiveness in people’s making decisions.
