有点紧张又有点窃喜,就是逐渐缩短时间的过程
222"Learning for learning's sake is an outdated concept. Today, education must serve an ulterior purpose and be directed toward clear goals."
I strongly agree with the speaker on that learning for learning is not applicable in contemporary society. While the purposeless claim “learning for learning” results in correspondingly aimless behavior, nowadays it is of great significance to clarify the ulterior purpose of education, the impetus that promotes the quality of education.
First of all, purpose is a key factor in most behaviors. The term purpose needs no further illustration only if we see that people eat because they feel hungry, drive to shop because they want to save time, go on a diet because they want fitness; all driven by certain ideas. Further more, only when we are driven by certain desires can we work more efficiently, as purpose functions as a stimulant to accelerate. This point is best demonstrated by some people's everyday hardworking for economic deficiency, while some others enjoy much more leisure since they don't worry as much. In this sense, aimless becomes detrimental to all activity in that lack of certain purpose results in reduced efficiency, consequently a deteriorated outcome.
So now we can see how purpose help improve the efficiency of learning. The phenomenon out of such old concept is once prevalent among kids, especially those aged less than 10. Kids are not those to blame since they don't have an integral view of the society; all they know is to go to school everyday, which is exactly the behavior of learning for learning, and they can hardly discover the ulterior purpose of learning on their own. Therefore prevalence of retarded behavior in some elementary school is explained in this way. Fortunately, they gradually get to aware of this issue as they grow older, and define to their own beliefs. As we see students intended to study in universities, those renowned institutions particularly, voluntarily rack their brains to improve their academic performance so as to get a better chance to be enrolled, sometimes even at the cost of their spare times. This is hardly conceivable in the elementary schools for those frivolous kids, yet it happens on the more realistic secondary school students, needless to mention the harsh competition in universities and higher institutions. Thus, the development and gradual clarification of purpose is observed with increasingly intensified engagement in education, which is a significant factor for the improvement of education efficiency and quality. Conversely, if university students failed to understand the pressure and aimlessly wander around the campus all the time, they are destined to have poor performance in learning. All university lecturers know this.
Hence to clarify the purpose of education is crucial for educators and students nowadays. The purpose of education is to better prepare a student into a member of the society with certain moral standards, life skills, knowledge in a certain field, and sustainable will to further develop oneself. Be the students future plumbers or professors, the above points apply generally. Teachers with a clear perception of the purpose of education can instill this sense in all aspects, while students that are aware of it can better manage their time and effort to efficiently engage in education. That is to say, to clarify the purpose of education can bring about a series of positive impacts on education. Just as the determination of destination is important to a travel, clarification purpose is similarly beneficial to education.
In conclusion, learning for learning's sake is no longer a justifiable claim for modern education. The ulterior purpose of education must be illuminated as the efficiency is realized only when clear goals are established.
