Politicians should pursue common ground and reasonable consensus rather than elusive ideals.
Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the recommendation and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, describe specific circumstances in which adopting the recommendation would or would not be advantageous and explain how these examples shape your position.
-----------------------
The problem that whether the politicians should pursue his elusive ideals is a controversial one. Someone claims that the politicians should make a consensus with real conditions instead of pursuing his ideals. In my point of view, though I admit the ideal is an indispensable element for a politician, the ability of making consensus is also an important one.
The ideal is the soul of a politician which should not be ignored completely. We cannot anticipate a politician to make developments if he doesn’t know what he should do. Only if a politician has an ideal would he know what his aim is. Sun Yet-sen is such a politician with a great ideal. When he was young, Sun Yet-sen witnessed China invaded by foreigners and Chinese people’s hard life. Setting his goals that helping China being powerful, he spent his whole life on striving for his ideal. Though he didn't completely succeed at last, he made a great effort on the revival of China and is widely respected by modern Chinese. It is just his ideal that let him know what he should do and help him to be a great politician.
However, making a consensus with others is also important for a politician to achieve his ideal. The reason why one had its dream is that it didn’t satisfy with the realism which he wanted to change. When changing the realism, it is inevitable to impair the gain of some stratums in society. To be a successful politician, he must resolve such a conflict between his ideal and the interests of these people. Take Wang An-shi for example. He was a great politician who launched a reformation to Song Dynasty, which was good for the society if succeeded. However, his reformation impaired the interests of many powerful officers. Persisting his ideal, Wang An-shi continued his reformation without any changes instead of making a compromise with them. Finally, gathering their power, these officers defeated him and abrogated his reformation. The reason of Wang An-shi’s failure is he didn’t notice the importance of making a consensus with the one who went against him.
On the other hand, making a consensus is also good for the development of a society. Most of people should make an agreement to work together in order to make a society rapidly develop. If they persisted their ideals without a consensus, many resources would be spent to impede other groups’ action, which is a waste and is harmful to the society obviously. In modern China, many houses are forced devastated if his owner refuse to move. Both of them have their reasons: officers want to construct buildings to develop the city, while people don’t want to move to other places. Without making a consensus, government officers have used many resources to doing such actions, and people lost so much in the confliction between them. If officers could make an agreement with these people instead of using forces, these resources would be used on more emergency occurrence, which is better for development undoubtedly.
To sum up, the ability of making consensus is one that successful politicians must have. Though his ultimately target is to pursue his ideal, he also should make consensus, or even compromise if necessary. |
